  • Additional RAM for GA-965GM-S2 board?

With RAM prices so low now, I am considering adding memory to a system built a year and a half ago with the GA-965GM-S2 board and an E6400 (Conroe) processor.

The system now has 2x1gb of GSkill DDR2 800mhz PC2 6400 and is running Vista 32-bit.

There is not much price difference between an additional 2x1gb or 2x512mb of the same GSkill memory as is installed in the system now ("NQ" CAS 5).

Which would be the better choice for the additional RAM - 2x1gb or 2x512mb? Would either be better for compatibility, stability, etc.?

(I am aware that Vista 32-bit will not use a full 4gb.)

If it were me and considering the price DDR2 is at now, I would purchase a 2 x 2GB kit, providing of course your board supports 2gb modules.

Problem when running say 4 modules is they may be harder to setup than say 2. There is the added problem that although you believe you are purchasing the exact same product some time later that you believe will match, it possibly won't.
Although the product may still have the same part number, memory manufacturers source different chips for their modules continuously. So your newer modules could even have a different make of chip on them, or if the same, it could be chips of a different revision or speed, making matching up with your existing modules a task.
    GA-P35C-DS3R Rev2.0 F11 bios, E8200 (@3.0Ghz), OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Reaper 4GB (@1200Mhz), Xonar D1, 8800GTS 512, Corsair HX520 (Single 12volt line, Max 40A), WDC 3200aaks/5000aaks in AHCI mode, Vista 64 Premium.

      I agree for sure.

Since you do want some G.Skills the price of 2x2 now is about the same you would pay for another set of 2x1. And you would have a 2x2 set for later when you upgrade or get a different system.

So I would also advise the same, and sell what you have now once you get your new set. If you live in the US, here is a Few Good G.Skill 2x2GB models that are the same price as a 2x1 kit >>>

      Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

      Newegg.com - G.SKILL HK 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

      Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

After looking, I do see 2x1 is a bit cheaper but not much. I would suggest you get 2x2, but if you cannot afford it you would be better with another 2x1 kit as opposed to 2x512 for sure
