  • Easier to Overclock with Vista than XP?

    I have a Vista/XP dual boot set up and have noticed that while I can run Vista and pass normal stability tests in Vista at 4GHz, I have to crank it down to 3.8GHz in order to get XP to boot.

    Is Vista generally known to be a better platform for ocing?

    if you can't boot into both i would say your system isn't stable

      Perhaps not. I've run OCCT, Prime95, Orthos and Memtest86+ multiple times at 12+ hours but only on Vista. I rarely use XP but noticed that it wouldn't boot unless I lowered the FSB.

        That is odd, because I actually think it is easier to go into XP at higher clocks stable or not

          I would have thought the same, especially as Vista will eventually find that Memory address range "weak spot" with it's implemetation of ASLR;

              Just to make sure I haven't gone crazy, I just tried it again - and unless I drop the FSB to get it running at 3.8GHz or less, it will not boot into XP. Weird. Of course, this brings up another point - the accuracy of standard stability tests. As I said above, I have made a number of 12hour runs using OCCT, Prime95+, Orthos, and Memtest86+ with no errors. Is 12 hours just not long enough? Do you think that if I let these tests run longer that they would show errors? I didn't mention that my Vista install is the 64 bit version, if that could make any difference.

                If you have a Mid to High end graphics card, you could use the X3 TC Rolling Benchmark Demo from Egosoft to stress test the boards sub systems simultaneously.

                Some specific tests, such as Prime95 and Memtest are great for the area they target, but it's sometimes a combination of things that cause instability.

                  I have had crashes after 12 hours into Orthos, sometimes 14 or 18 hours. So I always do 24 hours once I think things are for sure stable
