  • PDP Memory with EPProfile on ex38-ds4

Is it possible to use EPP profile of memory on Gigabyte ex38-ds4 board? I always thought that its only possible on MB with nvidia chips, so didnt bother myself with this although I own this system for almost a year now. I decided to ask after reading overclocking and BIOS tweaking Guide thread here on tweaktown:

    Memory Performance Enhance__________ [Normal]
This setting tells the BIOS to look at your memory for the existence of an EPP
(Enhanced Performance Profile) stored in your memories SPD chip.
I have confirmed this works, if the memory has EPPs, and improves performance. Leave set to Normal for now.
I didnt found such option in my bios (F6b).
    I own these: PDC22G6400LLK
Right now my memory runs with 5-5-5-16 (400MHz, 1.8V as reported by cpuz), but EPP allows it to run 4-4-4-12@400MHZ.
    Here's CPUz report:

Performance Enhance does not necessarily look at the EPP, it usually sets RAM timings according to presets from the BIOS itself.
If you have the newest BIOS ther might be an X.M.P. option, which is the same as EPP. X.M.P. was originally designed just for DDR3 RAM, but the msot recent BIOSes have it for DDR2 as well and it is compatible with EPP now.

OK, thanks, i will check my bios right now (I had flashed F6b late at night and didnt look at it too much).

Edit: no Mem Performance Enhance, no XMP option in f6b bios. I guess i could manually set memory timings and volt., but I really dont want to overclock.

i dont know your mbrd, but enter the epp settings manually should be good.

Re: PDP Memory with EPProfile on ex38-ds4

But should I change volts to 2.2 (as cpuz shows: 400MHz - 4-4-4-12 - @2.2v/EPP#1)? Right now it runs at 2.1v (5-5-5-16) - that what bios says, but according to cpuz the voltage at those timings should be 1.8 ... and IS 1.8 ..., so i am a little confused here... Which is right: my bios or cpuz?

Re: PDP Memory with EPProfile on ex38-ds4

your particular memory has 5 profiles.
3 of them are the standard ddr2 ones
The 2 epp ones are for best memory performance at those speeds.
cpuz "reads" that information from the memory.
If your motherboard doesnt detect the enhanced performance profiles, your best bet is to enter the timings yourself and up the voltage to what the epp says for "maximum performance"
4-4-4-12 at 2.2 400/800mhz is better than 5-5-5-16.but if you can set your memory to run at the 500/1000 mhz 2.3 epp that would be even better.
If you dont want to overclock at all leave the memory at 400mhz but do use the epp settings for 400mhz,the memory is tested for it. The 500mhz isnt really "overclocking" either as long as theres no problem on the mbrd with the memory working at 1000mhz.

The voltage you enter in the bios isnt allways what you get at the ram.. .See in my sig where I have 2.2 v entered in bios. What I get on the ram(measured with cpuz and speedfan is 2.16/2.17.

Re: PDP Memory with EPProfile on ex38-ds4

OK, I changed my mem to [email protected] and it works fine but I want to be sure I did everything right: ive changed only above timings, but left "advanced timing control" in bios intact = set on auto - its ok, I guess?
Also I am using "extreme" setting under "Performance Enhance" - I hope it wont touch my memory voltage or something?
              Thanks for your help
BTW, I will leave that second EPP profile for now, but I guess it will be usufull when Ill decide to overclock my CPU to 3GHz at least (ive tried but temps went up to over 70C in a minute or so of stress testing -at 1.4 v- stock cooler...)

Yes, extreme does change ram voltage and sometimes MCH voltage.

If my above settings are ok, I would like to know what would be best settings to overclock that CPU (e6750) but with stock cooler (dont have money right now but im thinking about buying this one in future: Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING AC-Freezer XTREME 120mm CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks)
                  Thanks.

Re: PDP Memory with EPProfile on ex38-ds4

That would be a good cooler, I am not sure how far you can get overclocking on stock cooler I have never used one myself

I would advise you to set your ram voltage to only +0.2-0.3 (2.0-2.1V) as 2.2 is not needed and too much, and likely may be more then that unless you change Performance enhance to standard. You can look in the PC Health section of the BIOS and see what you are getting with the settings you have above right now, and you can also check with Everest Ultimate in the Motherboard/sensor tab

Is that stable 100%? Can you post me a screenshot of this program with those settings >>
                    Tweakers.fr

Do you want advise on setting all your settings or not? Let me know, and also let me know of a CPU Speed you want to try with your stock cooler and I will advise back

Re: PDP Memory with EPProfile on ex38-ds4

It seems stable. Since ive changed those settings I was using my PC like 12 hours a day without any issues (was playing EmpireTW a lot) but I will lower mem voltage as you suggest. Here the screen:

As to CPU overclocking: I was pretty sure I could do 3GHz on stock cooler, tried it but didnt touch voltage myself and allowed motherboard to adjust it automatically and it set it to 1.4v no matter if it was 2.8GHz or 3GHz. And I said earlier the temps reached 70C in a minute or so.

Re: PDP Memory with EPProfile on ex38-ds4

Ya, I would expect 70c in a minute or so with a stock cooler, and especially so if you use Auto voltages. Do not do that and it wont get so hot. For 3Ghz you likely only need 1.325-1.35 Vcore if not less

Those settings all look ok, if you have issues rasing FSB after you think you have tried plenty of volts then you may need to raise tRD to 6-7 (Static tRead Value)
