  • GA-EP45-UD3P Boot Loop

    Hi All,

    My system runs fine on stock settings. I have also managed to overclock the system to 3.0GHz. However, any further attempts to get further just gets me into a boot loop. I have tried various settings - mostly around CPU/MCH Voltages, RAM timings - but cannot even get it to POST.

    My goal is to go over 4.0GHz. Currently attempt has been trying to get 3.6GHz stable. Settings below and for every setting I have changed, I also tried the "left" setting as well. System components in my signature. No screenshots as I cannot get this to POST.

    Been at this for 3 nights now without success, even with scouring a tonne of forum. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Have a read of Lsd's Reference voltage guide (In his sig), for me in the past it has caused me real issues when not set right.

    The advanced timing values seem a bit weird to me too, is that due to it being a Quad core?

      Id get one thing working where you want it..
      Have you had the ram working at 800mhz with the cpu on an 8 multiplier>?
      Try 399 or 401 mhz seems some have had problems on exactly 400.
      Have you tried the B multiplier at that bus speed.

      Your cpu can take a little more voltage than the 45nm quads I believe but im not advising you to increase it more... however Ive seen other Q6600 posts needing in excess of 1.4v(in bios..it will allways be lower when the pc is running) for 3.6ghz speed.
      If you get the memory running ok with the 8 multiplier ,maybe it will work ok on cas 4 timings with a little more voltage applied?Mine works ok at cas 4 up to a little over 450mhhz fsb and from your figures thats what youre tring for .Say 440-450 fsb ,memory underclocked and a 9 multiplier on cpu?
      it should work at 3ghz on almost standard settings as u tested.
      Did it set the memory running at 1066 automatically?
      Being too lazy to go checking older Q6600 threads myself :) maybe some othrer poster will link one.
      Oh also save a known good bios to work from with the F11 key and perhaps also load and save optimum defaults at least once to start with a "clean sheet".
      Just on the memory voltage..I know your not trying to run it at 1066 right now and you would think it would run at a lower speed with less than the specified voltage,but:
      If you enter 2.1 v in bios the memory wont receive that it could be as low as 2.06 (it is for me anyway).
      Try driving strength profile on auto or maybe 800mhz for the memory and i doubt you would need tRD 10 at 800mhz?

        The Advanced Timings section seems right royally screwed up atm. Loose settings are good while trying to progress with an over clock, but they're loose x 1,000,000. set them to 4-4-8-72-4 or 5-5-10-78-5 if you want to be ultra safe.

        CPU Ref and MCH ref on this board scale (as you've probably noticed) as you add more CPU termination (VTT). If you want to set either CPU Ref or MCH Ref up/down a notch, first change VTT to 1.200V, then change the reference you want to alter, either up one tick or down one tick. Then proceed to change VTT back to the value you had it set to.

        From my experience of this board (Q8200 @ 3.4GHz, currently testing a E7400 @ 3.8 and rising), MCH ref is either best left at 0.760V @ 1.200V VTT, then add VTT as you wish, or by knocking it down by 1-3 notches at 1.200V VTT. CPU Ref seems to act in the oposite way, and 1-3 ticks over the stock voltage @1.200V VTT has worked for me.

        I know you're on water, but 4.0GHz is still aiming high. It may be possible though. I do know on air, some have needed to pump 1.45V + LLC through their chip to get 3.4GHz-3.6GHz, so it's worth considering that you may need alot more Vcore. VTT can be safely set up to 1.54V (ish), maybe more, but is usually best set slightly lower than Vcore after Vdrop and Vdroop (Vdroop will probably be zero with LLC, I do still get Vdrop though).

        I'd probably recommend you leave MCH/DRAM Ref, DRAM REF and Channel A & B Ref voltages on auto. They're usually best set to 50% of VDIMM or slightly above/below. Auto sets this right, and doesn't over volt. This is the most likely cause I can think of as to your not booting.

        Finally, PLL should be good up to and including 1.61V. Intel spec sheets site 1.6V as a maximum PLL voltage, but 0.01V more isn't going to do any harm. Personally if it got me the clock speed I wanted, I'd use up to 1.65V PLL.

        Multipliers on this board can be tempremental, so as suggested, try other straps and dividers that give you close to the speed you want to stability test at. For example, as soon as I installed my new E7400 today, I tried 9.5*400 with a 400MHZ strap and 2.66D multi, and it simply would not boot. No amount of voltage or timing changes made a difference, it would continually boot loop. changing to the 200MHz strap and selecting its 2.66 multi did the trick, and booted with tight timings and a tRead of 7. Wierd, but true.

          Thanks for the reply guys. I will try all the suggestions tonight.

          Regarding the Advanced timings, I forgot to mention I have tried the settings as specified by the bios (the "left" values). Looks weird because I read one of the thread in this forum about setting to the highest values to get it to work (it was in one these templates). Then work your way backwards once you get it going. Sorry, I can't remember the link - have been through many many pages on various forums in the last week.

          Also, anywhere I have said "up to x" means I have tried, incrementally, every setting in between.

          Regarding the 4.0 target, yes, aiming high definitely. But what a great achievement if pulled off. The water cooling gear seems to work great. Running through a session of 3Dmark @ 3.0GHz, none of the cores went above 32C @ ~26C ambient. I've seen people with 4.2-4.5 clocks on the Q6600 @1.45V-1.50V!

          ...No, haven't tried 8x multi and having tried B. I did get it going @ 1066 on 3.2B when it was on 3.0GHz.

          ...On my Striker II, I had it @ just below 1.45v @ ~3.4GHz stable.

          ... Definitely. This is an invaluable tool. I have all banks full with various settings. The Striker II only had space for 2 - and couldn't even NAME them!!

          ... Thanks. I'll try that. I think the stock for the RAM is actually 1.8V. Warranty is voided (if that matters) @ 2.2V.

            Forgot to ask... would the RAID card I have have any impact to the boot loop?

            Also, forgot to mention below that the 3.4GHz o/c on the Striker II was stock air.

              Yep, at DDR-800, your ram will run 5-5-5-18 (JEDEC specs), however if you want to run 4-4-4-12 @800 or 5-5-5-15 @1066 then 2.1V-2.2V will more than likely be needed. You can check exact voltages being supplied to the RAM in the PC Health section of the BIOS.

              It has been known for certain peripherals to cause issues booting. You'll likely be fine, but you could always try booting from a single drive if you have one spare. I use one I ripped from a cheap TiVo thingie, it's only a 160GB EIDE but it beats corrupting my main drive.

              You may welll find that your watercooling setup is enough to reduce voltage requirements at a certain over clock, however it may not be enough to get you where you want to be. As you know, sometimes a CPU can suddenly stop scaling with voltage, and refuse to function at a certain clock speed. There are usually warning signs, such as a huge Vcore bump being needed for a tiny increase in clock speed, but it can also be sudden and without warning.

              Do you have a speaker plugged into the board? Does it beep before it re-boots? The board gives a single beep, 4-5 seconds after power on. I've noticed when I'm short of Vcore, or I've pushed clock speeds too far, it will beep as if it were booting, but would beep almost straight after powering on, rather than after those 4-5 seconds.

                The Advanced Timing Control confusion is understandable. In some templates you'll see:
                xxxxx..........4......[Auto] << 3 - 6 (set to highest initially and then try lower)
                In this case, it means set to 6 (highest) and then try lower settings.
                You and others took this to mean the highest value that the bios allows.

                Your memory is rated at 2.10 - 2.20 volts, but at 800MHz, you might do better at 2.0x volt settings. As I recall most Q6600 setups at 3.6GHz were using a bit more than 1.40 cpu volts.

                  thanks for the info.. i like the templates - EXCELLENT idea. this is my first gigabyte board ever so i'm not used to the gigabyte-ness (and perhaps some of the newer terminology).

                  anyways, let me recount my story.. i took on psycho's and kick's advice and made the adjustments as they suggested... no luck! i tried:

                  - setting multi to 8
                  - trying B multipliers
                  - setting CPU REF +1 to 3 notches
                  - setting MCH REF -1 to 3 notches
                  - setting MCH/DRAM / DRAM Term / Channel A+B Ref to Auto
                  - setting advance timings to 4-4-8-72-4
                  - plugging the speaker in to diagnose

                  after hours of this, i started looking at my 8 hdds thinking .. "all these boot loops cant be good for them".. so i left the bios settings as they were and unplugged the raid card and power cables. what do you know.. the machine POSTs!!! i was thinking wtf??? then i plugged the raid card back in.. POST. then one power cable in.. POST. next thing you know, everything was plugged back and the damn thing booted!!!

                  i'm stumped.

                  so what now.. running some stability tests - fired up prime95 and...BSOD immediately. ok, added some volts to the ram and threads 1-3 fail almost immediately. added more ram volts and 1 and three fail. added more vcore and they take longer to fail.

                  anyways, i think you see the pattern here. below are the last settings i had before calling it a night. do i just keep adding vcore and dram volts? to get it stable?

                  also.. thanks for the help so far guys. i have learned a lot not just from your posts here, but posts scattered all over this forum. whilst i'm still not quite at my target, it's certainly better than where i have been over over the last few months (wouldn't believe what i've been through with RMA's and organising gear and stuff). even fired up 3Dmark06 and got 15601marks just for kicks. motivation is back again!

                    Personally I would set VTT (CPU Termination) to between 3.2 and 3.6 and try another Prime attempt. VTT has, for me allowed the use of much lower over all Vcore. On the E7400 I'm playing with now, it was a no go to boot at 3.8GHz with 1.45Vcore, LLC and 1.28 VTT. 1.45Vcore, 1.38V VTT with LLC, was 12 hour stable for Large FFT.

                    By far the most important setting that turned stability round however, to get 3.9GHz, was to set VTT back to 1.2V, decrease MCH ref by 1 tick and put VTT back to 1.38V. I went from failing prime in 3 minutes (Large FFT) to 8 Hours stable.

                    If temps allow (I'm sure they do under water) I would try the following for 3.6, keeping Vcore the same as I increase speed, until I become unstable again.

                      thanks psycho. i will try this out tonight since i'm at work right now. (im in melbourne/australia +10GMT)

                      this is becoming less and less MY oc and more and more like YOUR oc. haha. by the time im finished, you're going to be able to tell people you oc'd a q6600 to 4.0GHz

                      yea, the temps are mad. i had prime95 (blend) running for 20minutes (100% cpu utilisation) and temps never went over 45C @ ~22C ambient.

                        I'm sure if you mailed me your Q6600 and your pumps, res's and blocks I'd have a damnd good go.

                        It's better, I feel, to offer practical "this is what I did and this happened" examples to re-enforce the value of reference voltages. They're like voodoo. One minute the machine's f**ked, next minute you've changed one single setting a tiny amount and it's 100% stable.

                        Learn to know what your CPU wants and you're 1/2 way there.

                        Is the CPU lapped? Give IBT a go and see how the temps do. It's still ultra cool for a Q6600.

                          no, the cpu is not lapped. i'd love to give it a go (and i might still), but given how much trouble i've had with my machine, cpu lapping is the last on my list. my components seem like they are dated, but they are actually brand/near new. the reason why i have the ud3p is because i needed a temporary replacement whilst my striker ii went in for a second rma - first time it came back they did nothing after a month. i've had to wait for powdercoaters to finish the case, parts to come in from the states (australia has nothing!), find time to machine my case and make brackets. by the time i get around to putting the gear in and playing with it, it already old!!

                          the way im going at the moment, i probably won't even use the striker ii when it comes back. but then again i have another 9800gtx+ ready for sli. *sigh*

                          i've got IBT somewhere.. will fire it up when i get things stable.

                          now you've got me thinking about lapping again...

                            ok, looks like i bit off more than i can chew. i got the thing running a little stable @ 3.6 (well, 4 hours prime95 stable, three threads up to 8 hours). been using the computer for a few days without any hiccups.

                            attempted to go the 4.0GHz and massive fail... it would POST but BSOD when loading vista. so.. dialing it back to 3.82GHz and now checking on stability.
