  • Case short testing

    When testing a naked mobo (completely removed from its case) for case shorts, what materials should I use and shouldn't I use . (Its a very very shy mobo I might add.)

    I can't use cardboard right? Because its flammable?

    you mean what to sit the mb on out of the case?? anything non conductive will do,like a piece of plywood or chipboard...in the case always use brass stand offs beneath each mb mounting hole

      Re: Case short testing

      I believe you will want to use the standoffs that the case comes with. Some standoffs from another case could be the wrong length and can cause failure to the motherboard.
      I have seen reports here in this forum where damage was caused by mismatched case standoffs. Cardboard is fine for bench testing a motherboard.

              Card board is fine. The fire point of corrugated cardboard is 258°C and the ignition temperature is 427°C. If your board sets cardboard on fire then it's likely on fire itself.

              Other materials that will be fine: wood, paper, MDF, any surface covered with those three, andi static foam, anti static bag.

                    Another material that you can use is vegetable oil. You can actually submerse the whole PC in it and it will do no harm. Good for cooling apparently.

                    This is only a joke, don't tip the contents of the frying pan over your board. I was serious about the cooling thing though. PC Format did it in an experimental feature once. they filled a big plastic bin with oil and popped the PC into it (PSU excluded ofc).

                      I saw the MOBO Submerged in Cooking Oil Video at Tom's Hardware dot com a few years ago. Funny! I used to show a lot of friends that vid. Nobody ever believed me before I showed them. But each and everyone of them were cooking oil believers after seeing it. But with YouTube around the past couple of years its no longer on my agenda of things to show friends. I prefer, hey you got to see the funniest vid of all time...

                        I'll have to set a MOBO on fire some day and place it on cardboard in order to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you are correct.

                        Will the cardboard burn too?

                        Or will the cardboard fail to ignite with a burning MOBO on it?

                          No doubt the cardboard would burn nicely.

                          I would recommend cleaning off any vegetable oil before setting the board alight though.

                            Psycho101, (And all in addition with a sense of humor and a bit of insight plz.;)

                            Now that I have successfully tested the MOBO outside of its case and all is good now. I can only conjecture as to why the MOBO ever acted dead while in the case or initially outside of it acted dead, and I have to nail down a few things. (So the MOBO doesn't move or slip or... lol)

                            Seriously now, here's what I mean. I have two PSUs, two sets of RAM, and two new CMOS batteries.

                            (MOBO is still outside of the PC case.) The PC posts fine with either PSUs. And in addition to the PC case being a possible perpetrator, and other numerous things too, one of the PSUs had to be in question of course.

                            But both PSUs appear fine now. And all other numerous things were admonished. Their cell phone privileges were taken away for, well, an undetermined length of time and are just for the time being restored. But if it happens again!

                            So, is there anything else I should do before placing the MOBO back in its case? Fry an egg on top? What?

                              Mount the board back in the case and only put in CPU, RAM and motherboard power (and video card if you don't have onboard). Short the pins that your Power switch connects to and if your PC turns on. It is not your case.

                              Hook up IDE and SATA cables. Test Again.

                              Hook up all Switches and LED from front panel. Test Again.

                              Hook up Front panel Audio. Test Again.

                              Hook up firewire. Test Again.

                              USB ports, before Hooking up inspect inside the front panel ports and inspect the flat wires inside (the ones that are against the plastic bit). If any of them are bent, your USB should not be hooked up. If all good, hook up USB ports. Test Again

                              Then add extra expansion cards one at a time testing between.

                              You should either have a working PC or determined which component stops the PC working.
