  • New Gigabyte Question

Just put together a new PC with a Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P. Having an intermittent problem, trying to troubleshoot. The issue is that on occasion, most often with a cold start, the system starts to post with the normal single beep, and a fraction of a second after the Gigabyte splash screen, the system halts with a small green rectangle, a Ñ character and a blinking cursor. It may then take multiple resets to get a normal boot to the OS. Thinking it might be the video card, removed the Radeon 4850, and replaced with a new Powercolor Radeon 5850, and then today, with a cold start, exact same problem. Can enter the bios ok pressing del at the splash screen. The memory passes 3 passes of memtest with no errors. system is completely stable, no blue screens, once it is booted into Win 7.

Full system specs in addition to above: Phenom II 955 black with Big Typhoon cooler, no o/c, Antec 900 case, OCZ modxstream 600W psu, Hitachi 1TB SATA HDD, Corsair CMXGX3M2A1600C9 2x2GB DDR3 memory running at 1333 1.66v, LG DVD-RW, super talent multicard internal reader, D-Link wireless-g card. Using F4 bios, Win 7 Home Premium.

Waiting to hear back from Gigabyte tech support. Hoping y'all can give some insight too.

I take it you've tried flashing BIOS and clearing CMOS? Take a picture. I'd like to see this

      Re: New Gigabyte Question

You could have taken it into a computer shop for testing and it would have cost a lot less than the video card you bought because you thought it was the video card...but also an excuse for an upgrade.

If the problem happens often enough for you to test it by removing stuff you don't need and turning on/off until you get the problem then unplug all PCI and PCI-E cards not needed, your HDD and your optical drive and card reader. Try over and over and if you are confident that it isn't happening, reconnect parts one at a time and re do the testing until you find when it starts doing it again, the last component should be the one at fault.

I would be looking at items that your board may look to for booting first, HDD, ODD, card reader.

          Re: New Gigabyte Question

Well, the video card was part of a planned upgrade anyway. have tried clearing cmos, reflash bios, unplugging hard drive, and card reader and no change. Troubleshooting components is a little difficult since eventually it boots and runs fine. Haven't swapped psu yet, but my limited experience is that a bad psu will fail when it's stressed. Once the PC is booted, it is very stable. Every benchmark I've run goes without a hitch, no blue screens, no freezes.

            Re: New Gigabyte Question

OK, just had this issue happen again, this time with a warm reboot. I turned off the splash screen in the bios to help see what is happening on the display, and this halt seems to occur after the drives, the HDD and DVD-RW have been detected. Attached is a picture of what the screen looks like. Anyway, is there a tech from Gigabyte here that can review and respond? Thanks.

Dude, that's nuts. Seems like your bios code is toast, or maybe even the vga bios. I really have no clue what could cause that.

Well, I'm glad to make a good first impression here. Maybe this is just the PC of the living dead, 'cause once it boots this is a fast and stable system. Won't be a fault with the VGA bios since changing video cards made no difference. I've tried reseating the 8 pin power connector to see if it will make a difference. Will wait to hear from Gigabyte. I guess as a worst case scenario I may end up with an RMA back to Gigabyte to get a replacement board unless someone can come up with another idea.

This is a community support forum, nobody from Gigabyte tech support comes here.

You will need to contact Gigabyte support for your region. This involves filling out a web form detailing the problem. It may be useful if you include a link to this thread so that they can see the picture of your monitor and the issue you're having.

I have also contacted Gigabyte support. They are a bit slow, I can understand I'm not the only one to contact them. Perhaps I was just mistaken, thought I saw in one of the stickies that there is a Gigabyte tech that monitors the forum. In any event, I do appreciate any help or advice that anyone can provide.
