  • Vista sucks,help?

ok recently i discovered vista had somehow made TWO documents folders, one was the one i used all the time and had all my documents in, the other just had junk in it...so i deleted it, thinking since they had different contents they werent linked, well turns out they WERE linked.oh lovely.so now my documents folder is GONE all the contents were just erased and none are in my recycle bin... i tried REcuva, some file recovery program and i found SOME of my old files but the majority are still missing.... i also tried a system restore. it failed as well....can anyone possibly help at this point? i downloaded a ebook before i read somewhere NOT to download anything for it could overwrite whee my files are/were....any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...right now for some reason i have 4 documents folders... i didnt create any of them. they just keep appearing :/

Sorry to be the one to tell you but I think your files are long gone. I'm thinking that if you've been surfing the net, downloading stuff, and done a system restore (all since you deleted a system file) that your information has probably been overwritten at least once. There may be ways that a professional recovery company could find your files but I doubt that you can get them back yourself. Someone may recommend a different recovery program that might have a chance but I would think the odds are against you. There are unfortunately a few lessons learned here : always backup files that you can not afford to loose - do not delete anything unless you know it is safe to do so (especially system created files) - if you do accidentally delete something that you need back and it is not in the recycle bin then immediately stop using the machine and use a bootdisk/usb stick recovery type program that accesses, but does not write to the hard drive.

I suggest you go and switch to Windows 7 instead. I experienced a lot of trouble with Vista and I had all the comfort with W7. :)

Although Windows 7 is more reliable I sort of doubt it would have made any difference in this case ... randomly deleting system files is seldom a good idea no matter what operating system is being used. Regardless .. this thread is almost 2 years old ... I think we can assume the issue probably has been resolved one way or another by now.
