  • Ex58-DS4 with Corei7 920 random crashes

Hi, I have put together this system early this year running Corei7 920 on the gigabyte EX58-DS4 board with 3X2gig OCZ triple channel OCZ3G1600LV6GK, and an Asus 9800GTX+ video card. Originally I was running vista ultimate, and I experienced random crashes where the system just hang. The crashes can happen anytime either during startups, internet browsing, gaming or waking from sleep. I thought it was vista having driver incompatibility issue, but since then I have upgraded to Win7 professional through a clean istall, and the problem persisted. I have updated the Bios to the latest version F11, and the CPU temp is normal. I have also ran a complete memtest and no problem there either.

I'm just frustrated since the system can be running very stable for days, and I'd think the problem's gone away, but a restart and it will crash again.
Any help would be much appreciated.

its more likely a bios setting thats causing the hangs, whats your current cpu,qpi/vtt,dram timings and voltages??

Hi, my CPU clock ratio is 20X at 2.66GHz (133x20), QPI 4.8GHz, Dram timing 7-7-7-16, voltages DDR at 1.5V and QPI at 1.15V

Please give us your full current BIOS settings, there is a template in my signature for you to do so.

For now, I can say you likely need to use more QPI/Vtt (1.35 or so), and to set your ram voltage to spec.

Hi, I have set the ram voltage to spec 2 days ago to see if that alone works first, but last night it crashed again. So I have now made all the changes and set the CPU to extreme instead of turbo mode and the system seems to be runnning stable. Thanks

It's been stable at 1.28V, but I've put it 1.32V and running fine. So, basically the cpu wasn't getting enough power? Is there any harm to the processor if the voltage is too high?
