    GA-P55A-UD4P vs. P7H57D-V EVO: Picking one of these up today. Need info about BIOS.

    I've recently become fed up with my EVGA P55 FTW. I am going to pick up a different mobo today at Micro Center. This is more than a help me decide question; I need to know about the current BIOS features and if Giga intends to include features in the BIOS such as the ones I am about to mention.

    I was searching and found this Asus board that has some unique Turbo Mode features for the i7-875K CPU's. The article makes mention that the latest BIOS's from Giga don't have anything like this, except for maybe one Micro ATX H57 mobo from Giga, the GA-H57M-USB3.

    We chose the EVO board because Asus was able to provide us with a special BIOS that supports fine-grained tweaking on K-series processors. Have a look at the menu below for a sense of the control it offers.
    Gigabyte's recent BIOSes do support the K-series chips' unlocked multipliers, but they don't give you control over individual Turbo multipliers.
    I prefer Gigabyte mobos over Asus. I would just like to know if any of you know what tweaking is available for the Turbo Mode multipliers on Gigabyte boards that have the latest BIOS firmware supporting the i7-875K CPU's.

    BTW. Got a GA-H55M-S2H back from RMA for a friend's build and she is wonderful! Got a revision 1.1 for myself w/ an i3-530. Took me yesterday afternoon to push that CPU to 4.0Ghz 1.3Vcore w/ 200 BCLK. So much more impressed with Gigabyte's mobo over my EVGA; an $89 mobo that is easier to overclock than a $250 mobo. How does that work?

    im not 100% sure but all it does is let you set how high the cpu auto overclocks to when turbo kicks in,thats on the asus,with gigabyte its just a fixed amount like with a 920 chip its usually 20x cpu multi but when turbo kicks in it jumps to 21x......whether gigabyte mb's will let you adjust that or not it will certainly match what overclock you will get on the asus

      Right, but I like the turbo features that the ASUS boards have.

      This video explains how Asus has enhanced turbo modes that are available for all of their MB's with a BIOS update.

      If Gigabyte boards will do that, then I will get one. If they don't, then I will get the Asus.

      Also, the turbo modes on Lynnfields are a bit more advanced than the Bloomfields.

      I agree that Gigabyte boards will overclock well against the Asus. I just want more features is all. It's why I am getting rid of the EVGA;their support ditched us in the BIOS department as soon as the SR-2 came out.

        yes i know what you mean,the turbo mode varies by how much it increases the cpu multiplier from cpu to cpu,the asus boards let you control that amount as for gigabyte i dont think they let you adjust it but dont quote me on that,its up to you really either board is good

            It would be nice to know, and thank you for the offer; however, I have picked up the ASUS P7P55D-E Deluxe already.

            I tried talking to some of the sales guys at Micro Center, and they were very knowledgeable, but nobody really knew for sure if the turbo multis could be offset like that on Gigabyte boards.

            It seems that OC'ing the i7 875K isn't what most people want, and if they do they like to push the BCLK up, too. I'd prefer to use the turbo modes and unlocked multis while leaving BCLK alone. Sure there will be a performance hit with the lower BCLK but I will get the power I need, when I want it, and when it is done I can idle down to save power and run cooler.

            It appears that EVGA will attempt a BIOS update to allow similar features. I will believe it when I see it. They have put all their eggs into an SR-2 basket for now.

            If it weren't for the turbo modes offset on the ASUS, I was really gunning for that UD4P. I like the way it looks better than the ASUS. I like the BIOS better than the ASUS; the ASUS is great though. I really am enjoying it right now.

            So if you had the time to check that out that would be awesome. I'd be really interested to see how that turns out. I know I'm not the only one looking for those features and it would be nice to recommend Gigabyte as well if I find someone looking.

              Ahh, sorry to hear I missed being able to help and you ended up going the other way!

              I'll test it out for you tomorrow and let you know, but just because it isn't supported with the current BIOS does not mean it wont be later so keep that in mind.

              I'll post back once I check it out, 875K is in a H55N right now so I have to switch it before I can check.

                It's all good. I may need to pick up a different board to replace the H55M-S2H in my other rig; the P55A-UD4P may be the one. Then my H55M-S2H could go back to HTPC usage.

                Thanks for the help Lsdmeasap. If you find out that Turbo Mode Offsets aren't available now, it would be something that I think would be a great feature to include, like you were saying it may be something that does come out in future Gigabyte BIOS releases.

                I finally set up one of my profiles yesterday on this P7P55D-E Deluxe; that video from Linus at NCIX techtips really shows how easy it is to get some quick gains from the i7-875K.

                I know my request in the OP didn't give you much time to respond, and I am amazed at the level of support you provide. Thanks. I was honestly a bit impatient, so I don't think that you answered me too slowly, just in case I gave you that impression.

                There was a BIOS F11 I think for the P55A-UD4P that had a note about "Turbo Modes Improved". That would be cool if it were the one that adds those features.

                  Ya they may do it in a future BIOS release, if enough people ask for it. I checked and there isn't any options like that, at least not in F10 for P55A-UD6.

                  Na I didn't think you were thinking we were too slow to answer, just was hoping I could catch you before you bought Asus is all :) Seems it wouldn't have mattered though since these options you want are not in the current BIOSes.

                  I'll check that F11 UD4P BIOS for you here in a few minutes, I'll post back and let you know what I find

                        Asus and GIGABYTE are always "1 upping" each other though, so I am sure GIGABYTE will follow suit shortly.

                        Does Asus have a Presentation web page or any news/announcement page about these features? If so maybe I could pass it along and see if the BIOS team is currently working on anything similar, or if they possibly would in the future

                          I cannot really find the page that explains that feature; however, if you check out this video from NCIX Linus explains it very well.

                          I know that you can adjust the turbo modes from the Turbo V application, but I don't like using applications in windows to OC very well.

                            I'll check it out, I know what you mean though - I just was hoping you had a feature or news release page about it so I could send to Gigabyte.

                            I'm sure they know about it anyway, I'll see if they have any plans of implementing similar in upcoming BIOSes, I can ask this week.
