  • X58A-UD5 rev2.0 6GB memory-only 4GB avaiable

    Hi!

I just bought my new computer with following components:

    Gigabyte X58A-UD5 rev2.0
    I7 920 D0
    Scythe Mugen2 revB
    3x2GB G.Skill Ripjaws 1600, 8-8-8-24 G.SKILL-Products
    XFX 5870
    XFX 850W power supply
    Creative X-Fi Titanium
Intel 80GB SSD, WD and Samsung 1TB drives
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

I have big problem with my RAM. Already tried original BIOS - FA, F9B, and F10.
Memory is sometimes recognized as 2GB sometimes 6GB, and mostly as 4GB. Programs like CPU-Z, Everest and others list all three modules as present and working. Windows says that there is 6GB and only 4 is usable.
    Nothing is overclocked.
Tried setting RAM as auto (which gives 1066MHz), and tried XMS profile which gives 1600MHz and 1.6V. Also tried rising VTT voltage.
Also tried changing memory stick to different slots.

F9B BIOS has most troubles - after verifying pool data... gives Recovering lost DRAM size and reboots few times until it manages to start Windows.
F10 beta BIOS mostly gives me all 6GB of RAM but is rather unstable.
So back to FA and 4GB of RAM. CPU idle temp is 38'C.

I also checked cpu socket pins and they all seem to be ok.

    Please help me...

Have you tried doing a fresh install of windows, just to make sure the problem isn't OS related?

So,use beta BIOS FB10 and try to adjust you BIOS setting.
      Did you try FB4 ?
      Btw,
welcome to forum, how is in Croatia now?

I've reinstalled Windows already but it didn't help. Wrong memory size stands in BIOS also.

I've tried FB10 but it seemed to me that it is unstable, but I'll give it one more try. How is FB4 different? Which settings should I set manually in BIOS, not auto?

It is very nice in Croatia now. Especially in summer. Come see our sea side

            Re: X58A-UD5 rev2.0 6GB memory-only 4GB avaiable

This is often caused by bentCPU Socket pins, or incorrect QPI/Vtt - Dram voltage settings.

I see you mention you have checked the pins, can you do so again and send us some pics from a few angles just to be sure.

Are you setting the BIOS up yourself? If not that might just be the problem, especially if you are not setting your own QPI/Vtt.

If you are confident you don't have any bent socket pins then skip sending me pics and post your full BIOS settings in a template from my signature.

If you are not 100% sure on the pins please carefully take some images for us to look over

OK, here are pictures of CPU socket. I hope you can load them
              nvarga at 2010-08-06

This is what I have been doing so far:
              1. in BIOS FA loaded Optimized settings, saved, reboot
              2. QFlash Fb10 BIOS
              3. Loaded Optimized settings, saved, reboot
              4. Set manualy many setting (later in post), saved, reboot

Now it recognizes 6GB of RAM. Boot into Windows, tested, OCCT, it works.

Tried to sett recommended memory settings which I found here (tRC=tRAS+tRP, and so on - expert memory settings) which gave me BSOD in Windows immediately upon showing desktop - BSOD says Memory Management fault.

Changing all settings, nothing helped only loading Optimized settings, new flash with Fb10 BIOS, again Optimized, and then setting values manually. Now it seems to be working. I have to say - I replaced my old Asus Commando 965P and E6600 because it started to behave badly after 3 and a half years, so I decided do buy me a shiny new toy, but this what is happening is far beyond my wildest dreams. If I knew, I would have bought AMD.

So, enough of complaining, these are BIOS settings:

                It's working now or not?

You should to disable XMP, and I would put performance enhance on extreme.

Put all advanced memory settings on auto, except CMD Rate, set that to 1T

Then set your ram voltage to 1.66 instead of 1.64

Also use Expert DRAM Timing Selectable (SPD), and set each channel one by one, that way you can see when a channel is failing (It will show up as N/A or -)

QPI/Vtt may need to be 1.25-1.4

                I'll check your images now.

If you have the board not installed right now new images would be nice, so I can see the full socket all at once, not sectioned like you have it - it's too hard to see what's what like that.

you should set qpi link speed to 36x, again if theres no bent cpu pins i would try another brand of ram if you could

tested each module one at a time in each white slot one at a time?? you could have a dead/faulty ram module or ram slot
if alls well it will boot with only one stick installed from any white ram slot

Now it is working, so I can't take new pictures of CPU socket. Right now I don't have nerves to take motherboard out of case one more :-)

I'm going to try new setting you suggested.

I don't understand why CPU needs 1,268V for normal operation? Is it because of higher Uncore frequency?

This is very frustrating. Whenever I change anything of these parameters that work, I can even log into Windows. BSOD immediately.

Even when I load optimized settings and after save and reboot change all back it doesn't work right. After few restarts it works again...

it usually does that when a bios setting isnt right,is it still showing 4gb usable?

Now it showing 6GB. I copied every last setting from XMS profile and entered it manual and it has problems. I can't change any of settings other than these I posted. If I do, i get BSOD at log on screen in Windows.

I think that I'm going to change memory. But Gigabytes memory compatibility list is very very bad and short.
                          I can go for Corsair 3x2GB TR3X6G1600C9 or Dominator TR3X6G1600C8D or XMS3 TR3X6G1600C8.
Also there is G.Skill Trident F3-16000CL9T-6GBTD and MUSHKIN RedLine FrostByte, 998805.

All of these are superb RAMs as this Ripjaws that I have, they are all stated to be designed for X58 chipset (is there any difference between X58 boards except additional equipment and power phases?).
What guarantee do I have that any of these will work with my X58A-UD5?!
They all are certified for whole range EX58, but neither is certified for X58A series.
And whats difference between this two? Only in additional SATA and USB chip?

it could be a bios setting not right, you could fully clear the cmos by removing the mb battery for 30mins,then load optimized defaults and re-enter any bios settings or leave standard and see if it blue screens,if it does then you need to adjust the qpi/vtt and cpu voltage maybe plus some other things you might need to tweak

When I flashed BIOS I chose to reset DMI pool data and then all is ok when it rewrites new data. It seems that it gets loaded with garbage over time?
