  • EX58-UD5 - invisible SATA disk on Intel ICH10R in BIOS when AHCI mode enabled

    Hi,

strangely I cannot see my WD 1TB Caviar black SATA (data disk, OS on a IDE disk) disk in BIOS anymore. I had it working in windows no problem, then installed windows without the AHCI drivers to test something. Now when I boot into windows, a PCI device shows with uninstalled drivers, installing drivers fails with an error. But I think the problem is in hardware as \i dont see the disk in BIOS either.

When set Intel ICH10R to IDE its OK
When I connect disk to Gigabyte SATA Jmicron then OK
I ran disk diagnostics and disk is ok

    Using Bios F12

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Petr

Re: EX58-UD5 - invisible SATA disk on Intel ICH10R in BIOS when AHCI mode enabled

you mean your hdd wont show up if you set to ahci in the bios?? you can do a reg tweak to enable ahci mode without re-installing the os,it will install any missing ahci drivers on reboot

    1.Exit all Windows-based programs.
2.Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3.If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesM sahci

5.In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6.In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7.On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
After this you’ll have to restart your computer, go to BIOS and enable AHCI. When you log in to Windows again, you’ll notice the installation of drivers for AHCI. Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.

      Any luck with the above?

I'm kinda confused, your last comments say it's visible and testing ok, so not really sure what the issue is now? Just invisible in BIOS, but works fine in windows?

If that is the case, try clearing your CMOS or flashing to a newer BIOS. Be sure you read this guide

Re: EX58-UD5 - invisible SATA disk on Intel ICH10R in BIOS when AHCI mode enabled

        Hello wazza300,

The disk will not show up both in BIOS and in Windows.
Unfortunately I do not see the registry key you mention. Note that the second time I was installing OS (XP Pro x86 SP3) AHCI drivers weren't integrated or added via F6 method.I forgot to write, that this has occured after (not sure if right after and caused by) I have canceled formatting this disk into two partitions using Windows disk utility as this utility started to format both partitions at once.

        Hello Lsdmeasap,

I have done some reading before, dont want to waste your time:), F12 was added after clearing CMOS according to the methods you describe there.

Note that I am performing final tests to my setup, so formatting, , windows reinstalling is not an issue.

        Thank you,

are you using xp? and when you select ide mode the wd hdd shows up?? if so you need a different reg tweak to enable ahci for windows xp,thats probably why it isnt showing up when set to hci mode and it wont boot into windows without the drivers

-Yes I am using XP Pro x86 SP3

-a) When using with SATA/RAID AHCI Disabled (SATA Port 0-3 Native mode settings dont make a difference) disk is visible in BIOS and Windows.

-b) -When using with SATA/RAID AHCI Enabled (SATA Port 0-3 Native mode settings dont make a difference) disk is not visible in BIOS and Windows

if your not using raid and just want ahci then set it to ahci only not raid/ahci,and you will need pre-install ahci drivers for windows xp or boot up in ide mode and do a different harder reg tweak if you dont want to re-install the os,ill try and find the tweak i used for xp

ok sorry but im not sure 100% what you want to do,do you want to use ahci mode for xp? and if the disk shows up in ide mode then isnt that fine?? if you want to use ahci then first download the pre-install sata drivers from gigabytes website then save to usb stick and select ahci in bios, install with f6 before you install windows xp and you should see the disk then

when you have ahci enabled where are you looking for your drives in bios? When set to ahci or raid the only way your drives will show up in bios is under hdd boot priority. Then will not show up under standard CMOS features. You should see your hdds show up on start up after first screen where cpu speed and ram.

reinstalled windows with integrated AHCI driver and AHCI enabled. Disk shows up correctly in XP. Still not in BIOS, unless set to IDE. According to Acebmxer this is normal.

yes this is normal because the hdd are not being controlled by the bios they are being controlled my ahci rom or the intel raid rom.
