  • GIGABYTE GA-H55M-S2V --- "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter"

Hello everyone. I'd like to start off by saying I feel bad for coming out of the gate asking a question in a new forum. I've been searching around for about a day now and can't find a solution to my problem.

    First the specs:
    Intel i5 2.66Ghz Quad Core
    Ripsaw 8GB RAM 1333
    WD 2.0TB HDD
    500W PSU
    NVIDIA 9600GT GPU

A couple of things to be noted -- everything I have in this apartment is SATA. I gave my old computer (ide/sata) to my mom, and decided to build my own. Everything I have is backed up on a single, 400gb, portable hard drive. I don't have a lot of things to test with, but if necessary, I can ask my roommate if I can borrow his CD drive/HDD and things of the sort (but I'm sure he'd like his computer untouched).

The problem: Well I got everything in the day before yesterday (yay!). I took my sweet time building the computer just to make sure I have everything in the right spot. Yesterday I plug everything it in and turn it on, and I see a boot menu! I pat myself on the back for a job well done. I go into the BIOS settings and change boot order to CD > HDD > LAN. Save and exit. It tries to load, and gives me the error listed in the title "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" I put my Windows 7 Ulitmate disk (full copy, not upgrade) into the disk drive, close it, press enter, it thinks for about 10 seconds, then starts flashing that message again at me.

    What I've tried so far:
-switching the optical and hdd between sata0 and sata1
-having only the optical plugged in on sata0
    -different install disk (ubuntu 10.04)

What suggestions do you guys have for me?

The CD must be in the drive before you attempt booting.

also the HDD that you want in windows on should be in port 0 followed by other hdd's. the Cd drive should be in the last port 4 or 5

I've tried it with the disk in the drive before starting the computer. I BELIEVE what may be happening is that when I save my boot settings in the BIOS, they don't actually save to where I want the CD to boot first.

I found an old sata HDD in my closet. Plugged it in on sata0, it booted right into XP (didn't even know I had a copy still lol). I'm going to plug the empty drive into sata1, format it, and try it all again. I'll keep you updated.

Set the 1, 2, 3 boot order to HDD, then CD, then Disabled or LAN if you need. Then use F12 at startup to get to the boot menu and be able to boot from CD to install the OS (Use F12 to choose CD ONLY ONCE at the initial install starting point, after that it will work by itself)

Before installing, be sure you go into Advanced BIOS page, then into the first entry "Hard Disk Boot Priority" and on that new page move your OS disk to the top of the list using PgUp/PgDn keys or +/- (Can't remember)

I tried skipping SATA ports, but the BIOS loading screen would freeze on "Detecting IDE devices." It only seems to want to work when they're one after another.

I reset the boot order to HDD > CD > N/A. At startup, I hit F12 and selected CDROM, but it still gives me the "Disk boot failure. . ." message. I'm sure the motherboard recognizes the HDD because when I do check the Hard Disk Boot Priority menu, it is there and selected.

              I appreciate the help guys.
This just doesn't make sense :(

Disk boot failure is going to appear if the OS is not installed, or you are trying to use a old OS install from another board (Only works sometimes)

Leave it how you have it now, and install windows and you will be good to go.

On the hard disk boot priority there is no selected, just an order, so be sure you move the intended OS disk to the top of that list.

Just saying because not sure what you meant, so wanted to make it clear that your OS disk needs to be at the top of the list, then do a clean install.

Be sure you have the OS disk in the first blue SATA port (SATAII_0), then put your cd/dvd drive into one of the last blue ports

Frustrated at it not recognizing the DVD drive when it's in the last port, I took it out and put it back in hoping it was a loose connection, and sure enough. . . I'm installing Windows as we speak. Thanks for your help, and be sure to check your connections if something isn't working properly :)

I knew what you guys were saying was right, and I knew I had tried the same thing about a dozen times. Fortunately it was just a little lack of muscle on my part. Thanks again! I'm off to play with my new, expensive toy

Nice to hear you got things going!!

Ya, it was probably a loose connection before, or sometimes certain drives don't work properly in AHCI mode (LG Especially)

Well enjoy the new board once you get your OS installed, and post back anytime if you need more help with anything!
