  • 890FX Deluxe5 dead on arrival?

With great excitement, I unpacked this beautifully packaged and crafted motherboard. I really had never seen such attention to details in motherboard product range.

But no charm. I installed AMD Phenom II X4 965BE boxed processor, fan and heatsink, connected both power supply rails, installed HD 5850 graphics card in PCIe slot, Kingston 2 x 4GB RAM (QVL), and powered it on. Everything spun up but no beep, no POST, and thus no display. I thought, it happens, let's check everything and I did. In vain.

I noticed that the Dr. Debug LED would stay off and wouldn't light up to give me any code. Now how can one debug a debugger?? Also, the power and reset buttons on the board wouldn't light up, either. They would only flash red the moment I powered my power supply on and then nothing, even upon pressing. The power button worked though. I couldn't tell if RESET button was working.

Any suggestions? I have been given an opportunity to send it back to where I bought it from for a free replacement. Should I do that, or give this another try?

When I hit power I get...
      8 -> 18 -> 19 -> 88 -> OFF -> 00 -> OFF -> 08 -> 18 -> 19 -> 88 -> 3E -> 88 -> 4d -> 88 -> 87 -> 31 -> 33 -> 38 -> 96 -> 4F -> 88 -> 60 -> 6(backwards 6) -> 88 -> 68 -> 71 -> 79 -> 98 -> 88 -> FF -> 88 -> 62 -> 98 -> 99 -> 88 -> A3 -> 99 -> 88 -> CF -> OFF
      on my diagnostic LED.
From hitting power switch this sequence takes 21 seconds and has the diagnostic display, power button, and reset button lit up untill past BIOS.

Use multimeter to check PSU, be carefull.
Or if PSU known good try different GFX card.
But if PSU good it sounds brokedead.

        Dear pinaklonkar,

Please follow the procedure to check your system.
        step1:
Turn off the system power and unplug the power cord. Remove all PnP cards (Plug and Play) and cables including VGA, IDE, FDD, COM, USB, and external printer cable.
        Step2:
Confirm CPU and DRAM is inserted properly
        Step3:
        Clear CMOS
(Please refer to motherboard user manual for clearing CMOS)
        Step4:
Plug the VGA card back to the system and also re-connect your monitor, mouse and keyboard.
        Step5:
Turn on the power and make sure CPU, power supply and CPU fan is functioning.
If you still cannot get dispaly, please change CPU or memory or VGA card for try.
If not, please kindly contact your local dealer for assistance.

        Thanks~

        Have a nice day

          Dear ASRock TSD - Emily,

Changing CPU or RAM is not always as easy for consumers as it would be for engineers/testers in ASRock. I hope you understand. CPU and fan spun up in my case and all the fans on VGA cards spun up as well. My power supply is of a very good quality and all these components except for the CPU + motherboard + RAM were already a part of another functioning system. But when I get no LED on Dr. Debug, and when I know for sure that even if CPU or RAM are faulty, the motherboard SHOULD point that out for me either via beeps or Dr. Debug code, how can we NOT suspect that the motherboard is bad?

I really hope you hear us out and pass the feedback to your company. A LOT of boards are faulty and need to be tested before they ship it to us. It causes frustration and costs money in the RMA process. And your website technical support is extremely bad.
