  • SATA ports order on GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3

Just bought a GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 rev.3 board and connected various SSD's, HDD's and DVD-RW's to the SATA connectors. I put my boot disk, a Crucial M4 SSD, on SATA3_0. Also, I put an Intel Postville SSD on SATA3_1.

Just to make sure that's correct: the M4 is connected to the lower slot of the white SATA connector (the slot closest to the board) and the Postville is connected to the upper slot of the same white SATA connector.

Now here's what puzzles me: when I look in BIOS, it shows the M4 is on IDE Channel 0 Master. Therefore I assume that Channel 0 is operated by the Intel SATA-600 controller. But then shouldn't the Postville be on IDE Channel 0 too? According to BIOS, the Postville is not on IDE Channel 0 Slave, but on IDE Channel 1 Master.

Perhaps I'm mixing up definitions. To enlighten me, I would really appreciate if someone could explain this to me and perhaps point out which connectors on the board (SATA3_0, SATA3_1, SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA3_5, SATA3_6) correspond to the various IDE Channels in BIOS. Thanks a lot!!

It should matter really how they show up as when in ide mode as you should be using AHCI mode for ssd's. When in ahci mode the drives will be in order from 0-5 just like the ports.

I think in ide mode it goes ports 0 and 1 are masters for channel 0 and 1 while ports 2-3 are the slaves.

But like I said you should be using ahci for ssd's.

I could never figure how BIOS decide the IDE numbering, having HDs on ports 0 and 1 and DVD port 5 BIOS show master for channels 0, 1, and 3, however in windows only 2 channels (0,1).

As said, this is realy nothing to worry about. You may also want to benchmark ACHI and RAID mode to see if there is one that works better for you.

Glad your M4 works in slot 0 - mine doesn't. In fact anything in Slot 0 refuses to pick up properly for me. Slot 1 (where my M4 is now) is fine.
(I posted another topic on this but seems to have stumped everyone, as there are no more replies.

Sorry to hear that. No clue what might be the problem on your board, sorry.

OK, I set the PCH SATA Control Mode to AHCI and now my SSD is no longer listed as an IDE drive!
However, I also set the GSATA3 Ctrl Mode to AHCI and guess what: the devices connected to the Marvell controller (my DVD-drive and an additional HDD) still show up on IDE Channel 4 Master and IDE Channel 4 Slave! Why are those apparently still configured as IDE? Anyone?

I have the same motherboard and I am having the same problem with the GSATA3 ports. I have them enabled and set to AHCI but they are showing up just like yours on IDE Channel 4 Master.

Hi - thought I could add to this. I've also had problems with this mobo. I started a year ago with a 300 Gb Raptor, a SATA DVD drive and I couldn't connect in a 500 Gb SATA HDD (wasn't recognized). I didn't care for the longest time.

About a month ago I bought a Samsung SSD, and realized I had to fix my only-two-ports problem. I tried a few things, got nowhere, emailed Gigabyte who suggested I upgrade from BIOS F9 to F12.

When I did this, my situation got worse - none of my USB ports were recognized and hence my keyboard and mouse stopped working (hard to respond to a BIOS prompt in this situation - my telepathic powers were on the blink!).

Slept on it overnight, got it going with a PS2 mouse so that I could restore back my original BIOS. Using a PS2 keyboard (yes, my house is full of junk... why do you ask?) I noticed that the SSD was now working - along with the old Raptor and DVD - so I installed Windows 7 onto the SSD, installed the mobo drives off the DVD ... and the rest was history.

Now I still can't get the older SATA HDD recognized (and having it plugged into a Sata-2 port slows the boot process incredibly) but I'm working with the SSD, a Raptor and the DVD drive. I came out ahead and life's too short.

Hope this helps someone. Gigabyte were helpful - but at the end of the day it was try this, try that, try PS2, kick something, lose some hair, have a beer, try this again...
