  • Gigabyte X58A-UD3R and Vertex 3 SSD

Good morning guys, I am a first time poster and a bit of a noob.
    I have the following setup

    Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Rev.1 - BIOS:FE
    Core I7 930
    ATI 5870
    1TB WD black SATA3 (2)
    8 Gigs DDR3 Ram

    I just purchased a Vertex 3 120Gig SSD.
Now from what I am reading, the Marvell 9128 Controller is a bloody waste of time and does not work correctly.

    My question is as follows.
I see there is a new driver:

    1) Do I use them? Or do I continue using the Intel port?
    2) If using the Intel port do I need to install: Intel Matrix storage manager?

I do not now want to upgrade the board and processor :(

I also do not know what to enable in my BIOS - as I said I am a noob when it comes to this stuff.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R and Vertex 3 SSD

The following information is from the X58A-UD5 mobo user manual:
GSATA 6_7/IDE Controller (Marvell 9128 Chip, GSATA3_6/7 Connectors)
Enables or disables the SATA controller integrated in the Marvell 9128 chip. (Default: Enabled)
GSATA 6_7/IDE Ctrl Mode (Marvell 9128 Chip, GSATA3_6/7 Connectors)
Allows you to decide whether to configure the SATA controller integrated in the Marvell 9128 chip to AHCI mode.
    IDE
Configures the SATA controller to IDE mode. (Default)
    AHCI
Configures the SATA controller to AHCI mode. Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and hot plug.
The optimal setup would be to use an Intel sata3 6GB/s port, but your motherboard has Marvell Gsata3 ports. I'm not aware of any aftermarket sata3 controller cards that use an Intel sata3 solution.

Your best bet will be to check out the OCZ SSD Forums for specific answers to your questions. If you use their forum seach feature, be sure to answer the RANDOM QUESTION near the bottom of the search page. The answer is case sensitive.

The Marvell sata3 setup is not optimal and many have reported "issues" with this setup. If you connect your Vertex 3 ssd to the Intel sata2 motherboard ports your maximum benchmark speeds will probably be about 280 MB/s which is still double the throughput of any hard drive. My Agility2 60GB ssd boot drive has been great in my older P35 system.

Hopefully others will comment on their X58 setups where they are using a similar ssd (that also uses synchronous NAND chips).

Let us know what they recommend, which sata port (sata2 or sata3) you use and how well your ssd performs.
