  • Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 will not power on.

The computer worked for 2 straight days. Then I returned home to find it off and it would not turn on. I have tried two different power supplies and it still does not work. No fans in the computer work, even the one on the power supply. Also I have a wireless keyboard and mouse connected to the motherboard. The receiver has the capslock and numlock lights on it and I am able to turn them on and off, even with the computer off. So do I just have two bad power supplies or a bad motherboard?

Could be something as simple as a bad power switch.
On the motherboard (bottom right) is the Front Panel header - manual p38.
You can simulate the switch by disconnecting the 2 power switch wires and then briefly shorting the pins PWRBTN# and GND with a thin blade screwdriver.
You don't have to hold the screwdriver - a momentary contact is all that's needed to enable the latching relay.

If that doesn't work try disconnecting your video card and drives (hdd and dvd - just 1 RAM module and the CPU.
Now if the fans come on it's one of components you removed.

If none of that works the board could be shorting to something in the case.
Remove the board and place it on a non conductive surface (cardboard box, plastic or wood cutting board, etc.).
Connect the PSU and see if it powers up.
Lol, I run mine that way for days before installing in a case when I do a new build.

    Hope this helps.

I removed the motherboard from the case. That did the trick. Thanks! But Now my question is what do I do about the case. Is there any way to insulate the motherboard from the case? I've tried raising a little higher in the case with the little brass lifters, but it then sits too high for the peripheral opening in the back.

There's probably an extra brass stand-off that's touching the board.
        Remove it.

I just looked at NewEggs's photo and it appears that the board uses 7 standoffs.
Make sure that you only have 7 and that they're lined up with the holes in the board.

K I will try to make sure. Thanks a lot Bill. But I hope you don't mind but I'm having another problem. The "Dr. Debug" keeps saying I have a 0x38 which the manual says Post-Memory North Bridge initialization(North Bridge Module Specific). What does that mean?

              Glad to be of help.
As far as the North Bridge problem, you'll have to wait for an Intel guy to jump in.
