  • ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

I have a MSI & Zotac GTX460. They are both identical but i cant enable SLI in the Nvidia control panel. Ive been through countless methods to try and resolves this, which includes different drivers and clean installs of windows etc, and i just wondered if anybody on here had any suggestions ?

Both cards are working perfectly by themselves, and are seen by the operating system. Ive got the second one doing physX at the moment. I am on the lastest 1.3 BIOS, and have a i5 2300 CPU.

Is the SLI bridge properly connected on both cards?
Does windows Device Manager show and problems for each video card?
Did you perform a second Nvidia driver installation when you installed the second video card?
For SLI to work, both cards must have the same amount of memory.

      Re: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

Yeah i installed the SLI bridge that came with the motherboard. Ive also ordered another one off ebay just in case this is faulty, which should come tomorrow.
Device manager shows no problems and both card work fine by themselves, which i have tested with various stress test programs. And yeah they are both 768mb.
Ive done countless installations of the Nvidia software. I can only think that either the SLI bridge is faulty, or the graphics card just dont like each other.

        Re: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

In the Nvidia Control Panel, 3D Settings, do you see an option to Set SLI Configuration?
I suspect that the mobo SLI bridge might be defective.
Using different brands of video cards from the same GPU family with identical amounts of video memory should not be a problem.
Let us know if the new SLI bridge fixes the problem.

          Re: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

No, i just get the physX option, nothing for SLI. Yeah i think, and hope, your right about the SLI bridge, although it would seem odd that such a simple device could be faulty. I should know tomorrow so ill let you know.

            Re: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

Mine when I connected them recently. The sli bridge wasnt fully seated.
Its the one that came with the mbrd yes?
            Rock it by hand .
Tilt it towards the front of the pc or back with the pc going see if you get a message that sli has been detected. Its unlikey to be faulty the bridge I mean. I had to move mine a little even while the pc was running to get the right spot :).

I would have thought a message would show under 3d settings if the card is detected, bridge or no bridge.

Does your nvid control panel look anything like this?(dont worry bout the speeds).Check the system info as well. There are options at the top of control panel to display sli bar in programs ..or not.Click image for larger version

              Re: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

I have managed to get it to work now actually, with the DifferentSLI hack here,

SLI with different cards - techPowerUp! Forums

So it must be that the official drivers see my cards differently, even though they are the same apart from the brand and default clock speed. At least i know my motherboard is okay!.

                Re: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

                Well glad its working.
They look like the 2nd last nvidia beta drivers.
Dunno about the different card bit either. I thought yours were both 460's of the same type configuration, you didnt get a 192bit 1gb 460 and pair it with a 256 bit one or anything?or just different brands, like mine.

                Interesting to see a 460 and a 560 working together , but a 560 is just a 460 with a couple more pipes unlocked,not sure about the 560 ti.

Maybe I could have had a 460 n 560 in sli .. oh well , wouldnt have been worth the risk.

                  Re: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 SLI problem

The cards are both just the same (when i check them in GPU-Z), except for the Device ID. Mayby thats the reason ?, but some people say that it should not matter. Well it doesnt really matter, cause this hack has worked perfectly. Im really impressed with how much bette the awesome Skyrim is.

Skyrim was part of the reason I went for a second 460 too.
