  • Asrock Extreme 3 Gen 3 DOA?

    Hi,

I'm semi finished my first build. I had everything hooked up, the 12 and 8 pin power to the mobo, the ram. The only thing missing was the cpu.

So I just wanted to see my fans run so I plugged a few into the 3 pins on the mobo and turned the power on.

Nothing happened. Not a single light on the mobo. Is that to be expected from this mobo model?

Even the dr diagnostic led needs a cpu to work? What I expected to happen was for the fans to run and for the led diagnostic to spew out some codes about 'idiot, there's no cpu in here!' But it basically is like a brick with no life. I will have my hands on a cpu tomorow but am concerned about putting it in a defective mobo.

It's not the power supply I ran some fans from it using paper clip trick.

    Please advice if you know.

12 and 8 pin?.. do you mean the 24pin and 8 pin? The 8 pin is for cpu and the 24 is mobo power

I doubt you will get anything happening without a cpu. I doubt there is a "codes about 'idiot, there's no cpu in here!" I'd say the board is fine but I am no expert

yea I meant 24pin and 8pin. I just tried turning it on with 1 stick of ram in, AND the chassis speaker attached. Nothing... no beep. The other weird thing is the fans won't run from the psu using molex either if the 24 pin and 8 pin are in the mobo. It's like the mobo is just dead... certainly there's no current on the 12v rail else the fans would be running via molex.

I'm not an expert on mobo's but I bet a gigabyte or asus would at least beep even without a cpu. There are many debug codes on this board related to cpu, such as 'cpu missasligned' or cpu wrong type etc. Until someone with this board or expert advices (please) I suspect its DOA.

The simple answer is no CPU no boot...and I do not know of any mobo that will post without a CPU even if the CPU is bad it is a required socket connectivity issue
