X79 UD5 Mofset (I think) Question

Hi,
Currently running 3930 @ 4.5Ghz at 1.36v
after 2 hour latest version prime 95 CPU ranging from 68-77c and other temps look fine according to sensors.
I have one question regarding this picture

The twelve square blocks in from of the blue heatsink - what are they. Ran a temp guage after 2 hrs prime 95 and they were over 100c
I've added a fan pointed directly at them which has dropped it to about 95c.
What are these components? Should I heatsink them? Are they conductive? I mean can I just run one heatsink straight across or do I need 12 small individual ones.
Any help much appreciated

Hi,

those are called CHOKES. They are nothing but copper wire coils that smoothen the CPU voltage through the magnetic field that the current through them is inducing. They re-feed the energy of the magnetic field into the copper wire coil extremely quickly for short periods of time, which is extremely useful at fast changing power demands from CPUs and GPUs for example.

They don't need any cooling.

At your current clock the MOSFETs don't require cooling but at times and at higher clocks the board begins to throttle due to the MOSFET temp. A fan straped to the heatsink helps then.

Or do you mean the twelve polar ones in front of the blocks? Those are most likely capacitors. 470 likely means 470 nF or 47x10^0 (47x*1) nF. I am not entirely sure due to the polarity marking, they could also be diodes, but that's not very likely. Diodes wouldn't have a rating printed on them in most cases.

And no both don't need cooling. The heat most likely comes from the power mosfets under the heatsink, not from them.
