  • ASRock Z77 Extreme4 not recognizing multiple IBM M1015 cross flashed to LSI9211-8i

    Hi,

I have already raised this through Asrock online support but havent heard of anything from Asrock for a few weeks so decided to write it here to share my issue.

I have ASRock Z77 Extreme4 flashed to bios 2.00 and I have two IBM M1015 cross flashed to LSI9211-8i.

I have confirmed that both of these card work if I put in PCIe slot 1. but the trouble is that when I have both installed, only PCIe slot 1 is recognized.

I cannot even find the second in the computer browser through bios so this is not an OS issue. Motherboard BIOS is not recognizing this at all.

Furthermore prior to bios 2.00, I was not event able to get M1015 in PCIe slot 1 to get recognized.

    Have anyone experienced this?

following is some key info about my system.

    Case : Norco 4224
    PSU : Antec EA-550 Platinum
    CPU : i7 3770
    RAM : g.skill F3-1600C10D-16FAO 8gx2
    OS : ESXi 5 U1
    Video : onboard
    PCIe : 2 x IBM M1015 cross flashed to LSI9211-8i firmware
    PCI : none
    HDD : 4 x WD20EARX ( all connected to M1015 on PCIe slot 1 )

Any help is very much appreciated.

I just now came across this problem as well with the Z77 Pro4-M. Did you make any progress?

I confirm that Z77 Extreme4 is able to see multiple IBM M1015 cross flashed to LSI9211-8i with BIOS 2.20

I can see it in computer browser under bios and also able to configure passthrough both controllers under ESXi 5

Issue I now have is that solaris express 11 is not recognizing two LSI9211-8i. I think this is related to Solaris rather than the bios as I can see the card from ESXi.

I am planning to install newer version of openindiana this weekend.

Also there is newer version out. 2.30 not sure if this will resolve your Z68. Also try submitting a support ticket through website. I did that many time

was there anything particular you did to get it to work?

i have tried all combinations of PCI slots; only can see 1 when in Slot 1. 2.20 is latest BIOS for the Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3.

i've emailed asrock, but no word yet.

This is what I did :
              1) Boot into bios and update to the latest using the instant-on bios ( forgot what it was called exactly ) update
              2) Reboot into bios again after update
              3) Revert back to default bios settings
              4) Reboot into bios again after reverting settings
              5) Check whether sas cards are recognized using computer browser or the component browser
              6) Set other various settings such as ram clock / fan speeds / vt-d / set shared ram / ...
              7) Boot into ESXi 5 and I confirmed there are two cards
              8) Configure passthrough on both cards and reboot
              9) After reboot confirmed that cards are configured as passthrough and i can assign them to VMs

I havent yet tested any hdds off the second card. I may have time to do it this weekend.

Maybe this is not yet fixed in Z68 boards.

I sent more than a couple emails to get their attention but didnt get any reply for two months and since 2.20 I was able to utilise both cards.

Try steps 2,3,4 and see if helps.

by the way, I didnt overclock or set any other pcie settings. Just left as default.

Hope you get your cards working soon.

Found that the drive was configured as Global-spare so I couldn't see my drive connected to card 2.

After removing the drive from Global-spare I could see the drive from existing openindiana setup

I now have following SAS/SATA ports available.
                16 x SAS 3 ( 2 x M1015 )
                2 x SATA 3 ( onboard )
                6 x SATA 2 ( onboard )

Finally I have all I need to start my next chapter.

                Good stuff.
