How do I enable the optical digital audio input?

I have the Realtek HD audio drivers installed. I can see the "Realtek Digital Input" under recording devices and have it set to my default device.

However, when I feed it an optical digital signal from my external audio source, I get no sound on the input.

I guess my question is, how does the optical connector on the MB know to use it as an input or output? I assume the same optical connector is used for both input and output. Or is there another optical input connector which is separate from the optical output connector?

Basically all I want to do is record a 2 channel 24/96 digital audio signal using Audacity.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think I understand now. I see in the manual that there is a connector labelled "SPDIF_I" which I assume is where the digital input is. So the digital connectors on the motherboard are only outputs.

I guess the motherboard does not come with a digital input cable, does it? It's been a long time since I bought the motherboard.

I see this cable on Amazon.

    Is that the right cable?

Ouch $30 for the cable? Bummer.

Looking at the Manual for your MB I see the connector. See attached pic. Looks like a 3 pin flat connector. I think you have the right one from your amazon link. I'd just try a local retailer first. Wouls suck to pay that much and it be the wrong connector.
