  • New System-No Video

    Just put together the following:
    Asrock z77 Extreme4
    Intel 3570K
    16GB Gskill Ripjaws X1866
    Samsung 830 128GB
    WD 1TB Black
    WD 1TB Blue
    LG DVD-RW
    Seasonic 750W Gold
    CM Hyper 212Plus
    Fractal Design Arc Midi Case
Will install Win7 Pro x64 when I get system running.
Temporarily using Samsung 21" LCD from other system

No Video card for now-wanted to see how Intel 4000 works.

System starts but I get no video (Blank screen),fans spin and I can feel HDs spinning.
I am using the DVI connector and know the monitor works (took from existing system).

Regarding the M/B, I get no MB codes, and one of the Fan Headers is not working .

Seems to me the problem is either M/B, or CPU, but don't have way to test either. Suggestions please.
    Thanks

    Re: New System-No Video

So the Dr Debug display is blank, nothing at all? No display at all, so no entry to UEFI?

Do you have the eight (or four) pin CPU power cable connected to the board? NOT a PCIe cable, with the six pin + two pin connector?

To much connected to the board at first, remove all drives except the OS drive, on the Intel SATA III port, the second pair of grey ports next to the black SATA ports. Optical drive on the last Intel black SATA II port.

We need the exact model number of your G.SKILL memory, for example, F3-14900CL9D-8GBSR, to check compatibility. Memory in slots 2 and 4, if you have four DIMMs, only use two at first.

If you have a mother board beep code speaker, connect it to that header.

Try starting the PC, and then immediately press the CMOS clear button on the rear I/O panel. Did you move the CMOS clear jumper at all? It should be on the center and left pin, as you look at the board mounted in a case.

Check monitor input selection, or try VGA cable. I started my Z77 EX 4 with the on board video using the HDMI cable, which surprised me somewhat that it worked.

      Re: New System-No Video

      Parsec-Thanks forthe prompt response-

Some changes since my thread start-Yes, the Dr DEBUG panel is blank when I have only the 24 pin connected. When I conncect the 24 and the 8 Pin (what Seasonic labels the CPU Cable), the Dr Debug lights up with a Code 55 (memory not installed), and the two on-board swithches light up as does the CMOS Clear on back panel. Then they shut down after 10 seconds and the system reboots again with the same result. Still no display. Memory is installed and seated properly.

      The gskill is:
      Model F3-14900CL10D-16GBXL 2x8GB
      I've tried slots 1 & 3, 2 & 4 for two DIMMs and and 1 & 3 for single DIMMS-no difference.

I have disconnected everything except the DVD-RW (SATA 2) and the SSD (SATA 3)-No difference.

I have the M/B Beeper connected and no sound from it.

So I should press the CMOS Clear while the system is booting??? I had understood that the only time to clear the CMOS was after uplugging the P/S and then depressing it for 5 seconds.

I have not moved the CMOS jumpers, and they are in the correct position.

I don't know what you mean by "monitor input selection". I am using an existing system SAMSUNG 21" LCD with DVI. It has no HDMI and I don't have an DVI to VGA adapter. Of course If VGA works but DVI doesn't then that is still a M/b Problem, isn't it?

      Hopes this helps.

        Re: New System-No Video

By monitor input I mean selecting an input on the monitor when it has multiple inputs, mine has three which can be manually selected with a switch. That does not seem to be your issue at this point.

The eight pin CPU cable is required these days, it supplies most if not all CPU power, you have the correct one, and you must use it.

Now your memory, with error 55, none installed. Your memory model, GBXL, is listed in the memory compatibility list, but only for 2GB and 4GB DIMMs, yours are 8GB. Current boards and CPUs, with the memory controller on the CPU, are very picky about memory. It is possible your memory is not compatible with this board and CPU pair. There are no G.SKILL 8GB DIMMS found in the memory support list. Try one DIMM in slot B2, as suggested by the manual for optimal compatibility.

You can press the Clear CMOS button when the PC is running, I have done it myself, it does not hurt anything. Yes it is different than the usual CMOS clear with the jumper and no power to the PC, but it is safe. The button is not illuminated just for looks.

Beyond the memory test/setup during POST, which you are stuck on now, nothing else is known. All I can say is try one DIMM in slot B2, or try memory from the compatibility list. You really cannot just use any memory you like with these new platforms, which is surprising to those who haven't built a PC for a while. Other than that, the board has a problem, but memory compatibility is seen all the time in this and other mobo forums, it's a very common issue.

          Re: New System-No Video

Parsec-Many thanks for all the help. You were spot on re the memory. I used one stick in the B2 slot, reset CMOS, and I'm up and running. System won't hand two sticks so will rma the Gskill. Any suggestions on 2x8GB kits? The only one I can find on the ASROCK site is one GEIL kit.
Thanks again for your very prompt and correct analysis.

            Re: New System-No Video

Great, glad that worked for you!

I've never used 8GB DIMMs, so can't help you with that. Not many on that list as you know, are you shooting for 32GB? If not, I'd just go with 4, 4GB DIMMs, much better selection. G.SKILL might send you 16GB of four DIMMs if you RMA your other memory, there are quite a few 4GB G.SKILL DIMMs listed. Just be sure the new memory is on the compatibility list, regardless of what G.SKILL states will work.

You could try putting your other 8GB DIMM is slot A2, clear the CMOS, and let it boot at default memory speed and see how it goes.

              Re: New System-No Video

Re 2x8 vs 4 x4-my CM 212+ covers up A1, unless I raise the fan.

No combo of two sticks works, but both sticks work indiviually in B2, so for now I am assumming compatiablilty. When I get my new Asrock-approved 2x8's (Kingston or Corsair), if they don't work then I guess it will be a MB problem.

Thanks again for the help, and when I get everything running, I'll update this thread.
