  • Will GA-X58A-UD3R support GV-670OC-2GD GPU

My GTX 580 died about a month ago and I replaced it with an MSI GTX 670 PE/OC card. I've had nothing but problems with the card, no video on power-up straight out of the box. Using another GPU, I was able to get into windows and device manager could see the card, so installed the driver and rebooted. This time, no video during post and Windows boot but when Windows loaded the driver I got the Windows login screen and could then work normally. I've tried everything I could think of to resolve this problem without success so will be returning the MSI card and looking to replace it with a GV-670OC-RGD but would like to get confirmation that I will not experience the same problem with this card.

    Many thanks,

    George

My guess is if your 680 didn't work and now 670 wont work, there is something going on with your rig. If you have a multi-meter you can test your PSU lines. But it seems strange to have two in a row be bad,

try installing two cards at once and see if they both show up.

Thanks Mark. I need to edit my original post - the first card was a 580 (typo on my part) and it did work but died on me hence the replacement. The card I bought to replace it was an MSI GTX 670 PE/OC card which gave me the odd problem that I would get no video signal during post and Windows boot. I had already done as you suggested and added another GPU that let me see the post and Windows boot screens and let me login in to Windows. Both cards were listed in device manager so I could then install the 670 driver. On reboot, I still got no video during post and Windows boot but did as soon as the driver was loaded. I was able to test the MSI card on another system and it was fine there and have changed my PSU but the problem still persisted. I also tried the MSI card with it hooked up to my TV using the HDMI port - and it was fine there. Unfortunately my monitor doesn't have an HDMI port although I would still want to have the card fully functional on all the video ports. MSI technical support were abysmal but Gigabyte technical support have been great.

Gigabyte technical support have tested a Gigabyte stock 670 card against my motherboard and reported it did work - even included screenshots of the BIOS screen. I'm still waiting to hear from them about the OC version of the 670 as that is what I want to get but thought I'd try here as well in case somebody has already got this configuration.

Fortunately, all the parts I've replaced were under warranty so, apart from postage charges, it has been a no-cost exercise.

you can buy a dvi to hdmi cable,it might work that way if your monitor has no hdmi port, but theres no 100% guarantee the card will work or not, only way is to try and see

Thanks for the response. I did know that I could get a DVI to HDMI adapter but I'd rather have a fully functional card than one that starts with a problem, especially since MSI technical support has been abysmal.

Good to know somebody else has seen this. The BIOS version I had on my board was what it was out of the box and was fairly old. I had gone through the Init Display settings (PCI, PCIe Slot 1 and PCIe Slot 2) with the card swapped between slots and all 3 settings tested. It didn't make a difference though but I didn't try changing the settings when I upgraded to the latest version for my motherboard and just left it at its default of PCI. As I'm just about to send back the card I won't bother trying this but will bear it in mind when if I see the problem when I get my replacement.

              Thanks for the tip,

Re: Will GA-X58A-UD3R support GV-670OC-2GD GPU

This problem is developing warts. I now have a GV-N670OC-2GD card that exhibits exactly the same problems as my MSI card. That is, I get no video signal until Windows loads the driver at which point it is fine. It works fine through the HDMI port but not the DVI port. In desperation, I borrowed another monitor as it is the only thing that I haven't ruled out. Interesting experience!! There was no signal at any point but when I connected my original monitor to the card, I got a video signal during post and windows boot.

Alas, all is not good. Windows doesn't recognise the card - it believes it is a standard VGA card and so I'm restricted to a screen resolution of 1280x1024 which looks slightly ridiculous on a 24" widescreen. If I add a second, working GPU, and check device driver all that is listed is this card - it doesn't list the 670 at all, even as a standard VGA adaptor.

I've tried the suggestion of setting BIOS Init Display setting to PCIE port 1 but that has made no difference. Not sure why the monitor change should stop Windows recognising the card.

Anybody have any suggestions as to what I can try next.

                Thanks,

                George

Thanks for the response. It reminded me that I hadn't tried clearing CMOS, so did. After that, I rebooted, still saw BIOS and Windows boot screens but still in 1280x1024 mode. Checked device manager and now it sees my card again but I'm still in 1280x1024 mode, so open NVidia Control centre and it seems to think that I have the borrowed monitor (an IBM 1280x1024 max resolution model) yet device manager says that it is a Generic PnP monitor (that's always what it was recognised as). My monitor should have a max resolution of 1920x1200. Looking at the monitor settings it is saying it is in a preset 1280x1024 mode that I can't seem to change. I don't know the make or model of my monitor - it is a Sun branded monitor that came with my Ultra 32 system.

Yes you can, but if the monitor isn't being detected properly I don't see the point on using the tool.

Open your nVidia Control Panel, Under Display, select "Change Resolution" then in the bottom left you can click on "Customize" there you can create a custom resolution.

but I have seen this before with bad VGA and also bad DVI cables. So I would first look at trying different cables... and I've seen them go bad for no visible reason, just one day you can't get any higher that 800x600 when the day before it was 1680x1050...

When I ran in to both on my bad cables, It saw the monitor as a pnp monitor but for me the highest res I could select was 800x600 (these were crappy boxed HP's) but I had tried updating drivers for both GPU and monitor, I even tried a bios update as these were integrated GPU's... these PC hadn't moved in 2 years from their location.. these were day to day terminals...

so last thing left to try was the cables and poof, didn't even need to re-boot... I had my resolution back.

I didn't take 5 min to rule out the DVI cable the 2nd time and sure enough I was back in business.

I've resolved the resolution issue - it seems my KVM stores the max resolution of my monitor, so when I tried a low resolution monitor it saved its 1280x1024 max resolution. Power cycling the KVM gave me my full resolution back but then I was back to my original problem - no video signal until Windows loads the GPU driver. At least I now know that the problem is related to monitor resolution but setting resolution lower does not make any difference even with the monitor connected directly to my system.
