  • Zalman flower on a MSI KT3 Ultra?

    'Allo,

Anyone know if one of those fancy Zalman Flower coolers will fit on a MSI KT3 Ultra? I've read it doesn't fit all boards, and the KT3 has some capicitors about a half inch from the bottom of the socket.

And does anyone wanna recommend another *quiet* but relatively well-performing heatsink?

Oh, and I have a XP 2000+ w/ stock HSF right now (46C idle...)

I'd prescribe a Thermaltake Volcano 7+ used on a medium fan speed (low if ya in an aircon enviroment) myself. :thumb:

then if ya want to let the CPU off for a run on the darkside ya can turn it up :D
low speed to me is silent and medium just audible (well over the other noises around here anyway) but I don't find high speed offensive either (but some may I spose)
    . ;)

I always leave it at high and really isn't a bother...

WiGGo why do they call it the dark side ..whats so dark about it?

Because most manufacturers ReaLLY don't want ya to do it. ;)

Hehe, the gigabyte mobo manual refers alot to "Overclock" :). But anyway yeah the low speed is silent to me and the med speed is like a whisper almost and high is ok but not bad.

            kepplah,
FYI... Every Zalman HSF that I have tested so far leaves a lot to be desired in terms of effective cooling. While the concept is interesting, the actual performance is generally less than stellar.

Wiggo suggested the Thermaltake Volcano 7+ cooler which is a very solid cooler. You might also consider some of the high-end coolers using a slower 80mm x 80mm fan. Since they spin at a lower speed, they tend to be a good deal quieter. But since they are larger to begin with, they can still give you ample airflow at these reduced noise levels.

There are a huge amount of choices out there when it comes to effective cooling. A lot of it will depend on how much money you want to spend on cooling. ;)

Hey, thanks for the comments guys, as for price, I'd rather not spend 50+ on a bloody heatsink :p .

I'll check out the Volcano 7. And what about the 9? Is it newer and better, or newer with more "features"?

Make sure to look at the volcano 7+ and not the older Volcano 7. That little plus makes a world of difference.

As to the V9, it is a little larger and uses an 80mm fan instead of the 70mm model that the V7+ uses. It is also mostly aluminum whereas the V7+ is all copper. The V7+ is a little better cooler overall and has a fan speed adjustment so you can adjust how fast it spins... and also control how much noise it makes.

Yes what Darthtanion said. The 9 is aluminum so it doesnt transfer heat as well, but you can put a Smart fan 2 on it :rolleyes2. But it really isnt worth spending extra money to put a better fan on it, so just get the 7+.

                  Mayeb they will make a 9+ or a 10?

Ummm, the Volcano 9 already has the SMART FAN II on it. Now

But he is correct. The Smart Fan II is standard and you can even get it with their CoolMod LED lights.

I know he's right... thats half the problem. But I think I would rather have a copper base, it transfers heat better straight off the bat...

The 9 does have a copper insert doesnt it?

Yes just like the Volcano 7 but the aluminium can't disperse the heat as fast as the copper core can deliver it. ;)

now if Thermaltake can fit their SMART FAN II to the Volcano 7+ base :D
