  • Driver Question on Fresh XP SP3 Install

I am trying to resurrect my prior PC
The machine is complete with all current updates

Problem, how do I use the driver files from the mobo web site.

I am running an Asus P4C800-E Deluxe. Board is set to run hard drives
as IDE, not Raid... This is what I wanted

On the Asus web site and under the "IDE" category scroll down to this file
Promise FastTrak 378 ATA Driver V1.00.1.30 - Then click on "Global"
This will start the download of file 378ATA100130.zip

Unzip this file, when you run "MakeDisk" it just writes the exact files to a 3.5 Floppy
I can't figure out how to apply any/all of the files

You can see what is composed when you run MakeDisk at this web site.
Go to this link, scroll down and you will see an interactive view of the files
ASUS WinXP Promise SATA378 (tm) IDE Controller Free Driver Download File List

    I appreciate any help
    Thanks in advance!

Re: Driver Question on Fresh XP SP3 Install

That board has two disk drive controllers, the Intel ICH5R, and the Promise PDC20378 (both support RAID BTW).

I assume you are using the Promise controller because you have IDE disk drives, not SATA drives?

So the Intel controller only works with the SATA ports, and the Promise with the IDE ports?

Anyway, the files you need are in the WINXP folder:

    WINXP <DIR>
ULSATA SYS Microsoft WindowsXP miniport driver
PTIPBM DLL Promise WindowsXP set Pbm dynamic link library
ULSATA INF Microsoft Windows miniport setup file

First, note where the folder with those three files is, you'll need to reference it to apply the drivers.

I haven't used XP in ages, so I hope this makes sense... You'll be doing a manual driver update.

Open up Device Manager, and find the entry for "ATA/IDE Device Controllers...", or whatever it is called, it will have "ATA/IDE" in the name. Double click on that to see what is there.

If you don't find an entry for "Promise..." there, look in "Storage controllers".

Double click/open the Promise entry, and click the Driver tab. Then click the Update Driver button.

Select the "Browse my computer for driver software", and then use the Browse option to select the WINXP folder with the driver files. Follow the prompts to do the update.

Let us know how it goes.

The MakeDisk util is for making the F6 (pre-)install drivers for when you are doing a fresh OS install.
#1 - Please, when seeking help, enter the make and model of ALL parts that your system is comprised of in your Signature, or at least the model #'s in your System Specs, then "Save' it.
____If you are overclocking, underclocking, or undervolting any parts, informing us of this and their values would prove beneficial in helping you.

#2 - Consider your PSU to be the foundation from which all else is built upon. Anything built upon a weak foundation is poorly built.
