  • Messed up video card

What will make my video card show up like this in GPU-Z? I know its nothing else but the card just trying to figure out what the deal is

I cant figure out why my video card will not work in windows and has artifacting only in the bios menu or any option before it gets to the windows 7 loading screen ive tried everything like install updated drivers and downgraded drivers and even tried to flash the bios of the video card but I think it is either corrupt from a bad flash from he last owner or bad video ram it shows up in windows as the right card and runs ok but no drivers run

    System specs:
CPU: Amd Athlon II x2 220 unlocked to AMD Phenom II x4 920
    RAM: PNY 4gb DDR3
GPU: OEM Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 1.5gb from Alienware Aurora R3
    PSU: BFG tech 550watt

I know its the video card because I was recently running a PNY GTX 260 core 216 and it has a higher power consumption than the GTS 450
and I decided to buy the 450 for an upgrade but apparently I got screwed over lol if you guys can help will be much appreciated

    Re: Messed up video card

You can click on Show All Versions at Downloads | techPowerUp and see if earlier versions of GPU-z displays properly.

There might be a bug with the most recent 0.7.7 version of GPU-z.

A google image search using: gts 450 gpu-z shows all GPU-z information using version 0.4.6.
Many of the screen-shots show that they are using older Nvidia drivers such as 260.xx

PCI-E 1.1? If the cards in the top most PCI-E slot unless someone else comes along I'd say it's motherboard chipset related.

The Unknowns and too no Computing boxes checked is strange. It almost looks like it's being confused with having the onboard gfx enabled at the same time. Did you clear your drivers out before installing any new drivers?

As Moderator I merged some very relevant and important information within a dupe post of the OP's into this one's far less informative original post.

Merged into Post #1 by myself was:

I used driver Fusion to remove all of my NVidia drivers but I will try to disable my onboard graphics and download an older version of gpu-z to see if it shows anything different

Well so far nothing has worked I uninstalled all drivers again because I have been using my GTX 260 and uninstalled all ATi drivers for my on-board graphics and chipset. installed chipset drivers and the 260.63 driver for the GTS 450 from NVidia and now in GPU-Z my GTS 450 shows no memory or shader clocks on the bottom still looks the same with the 0.4.6 Gpu-z as it did with the 0.7.7 version

              Re: Messed up video card

Can you test your GTS 450 video card in another system?

It's possible that your video card isn't fully seated in the pci-e slot.
Carefully double check that the card is fully seated from the front of the slot to the rear of the slot.
In rare cases the problem can be with the metal mounting bracket at the rear of the slot that won't let your card's electrical contacts make a complete connection. Some owners needed to slightly loosen the screws that hold the rear bracket to the rest of the video card.
Sometimes the bottom of the rear metal bracket is slightly bent or won't let the card make full contact in the pci-e slot.

Ive been building custom computers for about 6 years and this is the first time ive ever seen this happen with any video card I have checked to make sure it is seated correctly in the PCI-E slot I also removed the metal bracket just in case because I had a 8800 ultra back in the day that was not running correctly and I removed the metal bracket and found it was shorting the card so I lined it with a rubber spacer that I made so now the only other thing I can think of is to try and reload so im going to use my windows 8 disc I got with my pc down stairs to see if it works if not im going back to windows 7 but I will update tomorrow after im done

I'm hesitant to post this concerning my beloved Fractal cases. Yet I take solace in knowing it's been an issue with other cases too.

I actually was able to get an email back from the guy in question, this is his response:
"It ended up being a problem with my new Fractal case. Basically, the metal part that you screw the video card to on the case was too high up away from the motherboard - which made it impossible for the video card to be properly seated.

                    Re: Messed up video card

Well back to my little GTX 260 and everything is running like it was before with it and still no luck on the GTS 450 I loaded windows 8 and keep getting errors when starting up and it keeps trying to restore the OS and when I put my 260 in it runs fine...no idea whats going on I took the Heatsink off the 450 and looked for burns or popped caps but it still looks like new hardly and dust at all guess its corrupt memory or the bios of the card my 260 is a lot bigger than the 450 and a lot heavier so I figured if there was anything wrong with the card not being seated properly or anything it would happen with the 260 not the light little 450
