  • Spontaneous restart on cold starts

Stumped on a problem here. Helped a friend built a machine, specs as follows:

    Gigabyte H87N-WIFI
    Core i5-4440 (stock voltage Auto)
G.Skill 8GB DDR3-1600 (set to run on XMPP 9-9-9-24, voltage set to Auto)
    Crucial M500 240GB
    Powercolor Radeon 5770 1GB
    Western Digital (Black?) hard drive
    DVD-RW Drive
    Windows 7 Pro clean install
OCZ ModXStream 600W PS, then swapped for a Seasonic G650 650W

Initially I tested the machine it's fine, ran games and stayed on just fine. But after he brought it home, the machine seems to spontaneous restart when it's cold. It's not a BSOD since auto restart is set to off. Funny thing is, after the machine stays on for a while, it runs stable.

I tried replacing the PS after reading all the horror stories with the OCZ and running it down to bare minimals, but it's still restarting on cold. I'm trying now with two of my own DIMMs (G.Skill Sniper 2x8GB). Initially it won't take both, it will keep cycling on and off. Took one out, it started, did a BIOS reset, put the second one back in and now it runs. Going to try a few more power on cycles after shutting down.

    Thoughts? Thanks.

what dram is the ram rated at? tried manually setting it? maybe 1.55v or 1.65v

cold boots are usually ram setting/voltage related

      It's 1.5V.

I am tempted to raise the VCSSA to try though. I had to raise my IMC and Vtt on my own Sniper M3 Z77 even though I wasn't overclocking. Not sure why but it cured my random BSOD, so was thinking if it's the same thing.

Re: Spontaneous restart on cold starts

Memory controller voltage is called CPU v Ring, but for that setup, unless your overclocking, you shouldn't need anymore.

Now the bad part.........Your problem sounds exactly the same as a problem I was having with my G1 Sniper Z87, with 2 sticks installed in dual channel I just kept getting error code 15, alot of people will tell you that error 15 is a memory problem, but in the manual it actually states, "Northbridge initialization error", but would work with 1 stick or both sticks in single channel mode, I spoke on the phone to a Gigabyte engineer who told me its either bent pins, the socket itself, or the CPU memory controller, so first I RMA'd the board, it was returned as not faulty to me, got rid of the board and brought a G1 Sniper 5, same problem, turned out to be the CPU after all, the replacement worked fine.

I would only ever get this problem if I either switched the PSU off or unplugged the PSU, if there was power running to my machine, ie shut down but power LEDs still on, it would fire up first time every time.

The POST problem went away, actually.

I just went ahead and bumped up the System Agent voltage, did one test and it didn't reboot. Going to do another test and hopefully this cures it.

You might be on to something. Went back to the store, they swapped the board and it didn't go away. Problem is convincing them to replace the CPU now...

However I tried your PSU trick it didn't do it. It really only restarted if left overnight, even leaving it 2 hours sitting didn't do it.

Re: Spontaneous restart on cold starts

Noticed one thing... On Gigabyte's site, it lists that the H87N-WIFI has an F5 BIOS, but I haven't tried it since it's not listed for the rev 2.0 board. However the F4 BIOS is cross listed for both 1.x and 2.0 revisions.

Anyone tried flashing F5 to their 2.0 board? Safe to try?

In all honesty, and I think alot of people would agree with me, these Intel Haswell CPU's are a load of rubbish, my toaster runs cooler, the TIM inside them is cheap rubbish, and you have to void your warranty and delid it to get any slight performance out of them, on top of doing that, unless youu get a golden chip, they are rubbish overclockers.

Hence Intel bringing out a new version of them.

You will be the 3rd person (if it turns out to be your CPU) I know of to get one with a faulty memory controller, which is another negative against Haswell, you would expect better from Intel for a £250 chip, Rant over, and breathe

Isn't 4440 already a speedbump refresh of the 4430? That was my understanding.

I'm not even planning to overclock it, just at least trying to get to run at spec stably.

OK I'm not sure if it's my bad luck or I just suck at building machines now that I haven't really done it for so long... back with a third build for a friend that is experiencing random problems out of the box:

                        Core i5 4590
                        Gigabyte H97N-WIFI
                        G.Skill DDR3-1600 CL10 2x8GB
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 (originally opted for an XFX Radeon R9 290, but the cooler won't fit the case)
                        Plextor M6S 256GB
                        Seagate 2TB 7200RPM
                        Silverstone RVZ01 + Silverstone 80Plus Gold 450W

Stock motherboard settings with only XMP enabled.

It happened once after installing Windows, and another time my friend reported stuck with a blank desktop and moving cursor after freeze. Thoughts?
