  • X99 pci-e x16 slot question

    @Stasio

I just got the Z97X Gaming 7 yesterday. A very nice board. For one thing, the PCIE x16 is in the second slot, allowing for wide air coolers.

But I am looking at updating my daughter's Photoshop rig with a 6-core i7 5820K. Last year, I saw a deal on an NH-D14 SE2011 that I couldn't pass up. I've been planning to use that to cool whatever Haswell-E I got. Now I'm looking at Gigabyte Z99X boards, and you've confirmed what I fearing: none of them have the 16x PCIE in the second slot. They are all in the first slot.

This crimps my options for air cooling. Are there any Z99X boards you know of that have the 16x PCIE in the second slot?

    Re: X99 pci-e x16 slot question

From some pictures on the web, the ASRock X99 Extreme6 almost gives you what you want.

Note the placement of the 4-pin molex connector that is between the top x16 pci-e slot and the memory slots.

Unfortunately the picture on the ASRock web site does not have the same molex position in their photo.

Looks promising: there are only six slots, then the Molex. I'll have to DL the manual and see if they provide measurements.

        Re: X99 pci-e x16 slot question

It looks like the non-ASRock websites posted pictures from the Computex 2014 show in June 2014.

Notice that none of the other pictures have the heat sinks installed on the motherboard.

You can also check out the AnandTech | Computex 2014: X99 on Display from ASRock article and their photos.

You might need to contact ASRock tech support to confirm which setup is used with the X99 Extreme6 production motherboard model.

          Re: X99 pci-e x16 slot question

ALL GIGABYTE X99 models has :

          2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIE_1, PCIE_2)

            Re: X99 pci-e x16 slot question

Well, that confirmed what I saw -- no NH-D14's or NH-D15's need apply. Nor Silver Arrows. I couldn't find any ASUS with the first slot inhabited by a PCIE x1 -- only x16's.

BTW -- is the first slot = slot 0 or slot 1? Does anyone know?
