  • What do these mean?

I have a GA-Z97X Gaming 7 motherboard. When I open SIV or OC I can select a list, and then I can see various items in the system, from the Vcore to the speeds of the various fans.

I am looking at temps: right now I have a System at 28c, a PCH at 40c and a CPU at 20c. In real Temp, my cores run 24-28c. In CPUID HWMonitor, my cores run 24-28c with a "package" temp that tracks my hottest core. TMPIN0 is 28c, TMPIN1 is 40c and TMP2 is 20c. NB -- this is with an open setup, so there is no case to channel air up past the PCH.

From this I conclude that "System" on the Gigabyte list means it is reading my hottest core. PCH seems to be the PCH chip. And "CPU" is Tcase, located at the junction of the case and the CPU silicon. At least, that is what makes sense to me.

Please tell me if I am right or wrong in this.
    CPU: i7 4770k at 4.3GHz Vcore=1.19v Vccin=1.8v Uncore=4GHz Vrin=1.09v
    MB: Gigabyte GA-Z87X-UD4H (Rev 1) F9
Heatsink: Prolimatech Armageddon with 2 NF-A14's, Gelid GC Extreme TIM
    RAM: 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix DDR3-1600 @1600MHz Vdimm @1.5v (auto) 9-9-9-24
    SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 512GB; HD's: WD Black 4TB, WD Red 3TB
PSU: Seasonic X-750; CM N600 case Trophy Run: 5GHz

I am running OCCT as I write this. On Real Temp and HWMonitor, the core temps are running mostly in the 60's. The "Package" temp seems to be tracking the hottest core. But the "System" temp in the Gigabyte software is 28c. So is TMPIN0 in HWMonitor.

    Curious. PCH is 41c now.

    What is "System?"

      Re: What do these mean?

My guess would be, System is mother board temperature. 28C would be an appropriate mother board temperature, given other hardware monitoring programs I've used. If System does not change with core temperatures, as you said it doesn't, then that also makes me think it is the mother board temperature. Where that sensor is on your board, or any board, is a good question.

PCH is the Z97 chipset, PCH is the term Intel uses for the chipset, Platform Controller Hub. PCH temperature does not fluctuate like a CPU does, but it will change given the ambient temperature and air movement across its heat sink. 40C is not a bad temperature for a Z97, I've seen lower but that depends on the heat sink, its mounting, TIM application, and air movement across the heat sink.

Max TDP of the Z97 is 4.1W, but no max temperature is given in the specs. Older chipsets have max temperatures higher than CPUs, over 100C. The X58 chipset used with the i7-900 series processors is notorious for running hot, 70C or more with a much larger heat sink than used on a Z97. The old Intel 4 series chipsets could only report a lowest temperature of ~50C, that was the starting point. Some X79 chipset boards have small fans on the X79 cooler. The Z87 and Z97 chipsets run much cooler than previous Intel chipsets.

The "work" these chipsets do has changed quite a bit over the years, so we can't compare their temperatures as an equivalent comparison. For example, the onboard graphics chip/die was on the chipset in the Intel 4 series chipsets.

Try HWiNFO64 and compare its readings to SIV and OC, etc.
