  • ASROCK G31M-GS R2.0 socket 775 - question about 4bg RAM

    Hi, I have a motherboard ASROCK G31M-GS R2.0 socket 775, a processor Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 2.5Ghz and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I would like to have 8 Gb RAM but the motherboard only has 2 slots:
    ASRock > G31M-GS R2.0

In that spec page I can read in RAM section:
    - Dual Channel DDR2 memory technology
    - 2 x DDR2 DIMM slots
    - Supports DDR2 800/667 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
    - Max. capacity of system memory: 8GB*

I have, therefore, to buy 2x4Gb DDR2 Dimms. However they are quite expensive (new) and even in the used market, like Ebay, the prices are not great.

Looking in ebay I can see this:
    NEW 8GB 2X4GB DDR2 800MHZ PC2-6400 240 PINS DIMM MEMORY RAM FOR AMD MOTHERBOARD | eBay

    In the specs it says:
    "NEW 8GB 2X4GB DDR2 800MHZ PC2-6400 240 PINS DIMM MEMORY RAM FOR AMD MOTHERBOARD"

Sorry for the questions but I'm quite illiterate in RAM terminology:
    - The expression PC2 is the same than saying DDR2, right ? What about the 6400. What does it mean ?
    - About the 240 PINS I think it's common to all DDR2 dims, correct ?
    - If they say it's for AMD motherboard, it won't fit in another brand ?

    Many thanks

    Re: ASROCK G31M-GS R2.0 socket 775 - question about 4bg RAM

PC2 just means it is DDR2 memory.

6400 is the maximum data transfer rate, 6,400 MB/s.

All DDR2 DIMMs are 240 pin and will fit in your board. DDR2 SODIMMs will not fit.

When they say it's for an AMD mother board, that does not it won't physically fit in an Intel processor board. It does mean that the memory might not be compatible electronically. That means it would fit in your board, but the PC won't POST or boot into Windows.

Notice it states in the eBay page, "Compatible with AMD system.". No mention of use with an Intel system.

Do not assume it will work with an Intel board, contact the seller for more information.
