  • Is something wrong with my processor?

Hey guys, I've built a new gaming system recently and these are the specs:

    Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
    ASRock Z97 EXTREME6 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    G.Skill Trident X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2400 Memory
Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
    Sapphire Radeon R9 290 4GB Tri-X Video Card
EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Fractal Design Define R5 ATX Mid Tower Case

However there seem to be something wrong with the temperature as it's unusually high, I'm not sure whether there's something wrong with my processor or not. Basically after turning my computer on and let it sit idle for 5 minutes, while monitoring using the tool HWMonitor PRO. The temperature for the CPU frequently hits 39°C, occasionally even spikes up to 50°C for a second. This is when I'm using Balanced power profile while doing absolutely nothing!

Also I've tested it in a military simulator game while running an intense large scale battle, the temperature frequently stays at 79°C. This is while using the High Performance power profile. Switching XMP on or off in BIOS doesn't seem to change anything.

Is this normal for this processor or is something definitely wrong? I'm all new to system building and this is the first one I've ever built. Should I run other benchmarks or stress tests to provide better results, if so which one should I use? And this is for all components as well not just the CPU. I've heard about Prime95 a lot but it seems to intentionally run at really high temperatures, is it safe to do so?

I'm really lost at the moment and don't know what to do since everything seems so overwhelming, so would really appreciate any help you guys can provide!

    Best Regards,

Re: Is something wrong with my processor?

Are you using the stock Intel CPU cooler? This is the most important question.

Are you using most or all of the BIOS/UEFI default option settings?

Did you add any case fans to your R5, or just use the included fans?

Haswell processors like yours tend to run warm, and the default BIOS settings do not enable all the CPU power saving options to help keep it cooler at idle.

No need to run other stress tests, anyone that owns a Haswell based PC will be familiar with its temperature situation.

Ahh thanks for your response, good to see you again parsec!
      To answer your questions:

      1. Sorry I forgot to mention this previously, yeah I'm running the intel stock cooler.
However those temperatures I've posted above are for the system when it's NOT
overclocked at all. Is this high degree of heat normal for non overclocked system?
Just reached 87°C while testing around in ArmA 3...

      2. Yeah everything for the BIOS/UEFI is at default, with XMP off as well.

      3. Yeah I'm currently only using the two included fans from the R5.

Actually I'll put in more detail below.

Re: Is something wrong with my processor?

I really don't know how to say this. So I've removed the whole middle HDD cage from my system, hoping to allow better airflow
from the front to blow directly onto the mobo. Switched the fans from 7V to 12V with the fan controller that my case have.
And all the mobo setting at default with XMP off.

I've ran the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, while running its benchmark, it frequently hit 100°C, probably even off the chart too.
And when doing the CPU stress test, it hit above 90°C in just 2 min, and I had to stop the test.
While in idle mode it stays around 37°C with just 1% CPU utilization.

I'm not even sure what to do now, I'm afraid any other benchmarks will fry my system. Is this even normal with the stock cooler or something
        definitely wrong?

Re: Is something wrong with my processor?

I've also tried to look at the temperature reading in my BIOS/UEFI.

My room temperature is just 19°C and after opening my motherboard BIOS/UEFI, After 5 min it shows the CPU temp to be 55°C while the M/B is 35°C

I don't even know what to think of it now, either the sensor is being whacky or something seriously wrong with my system, what do you suggest that I do?

Re: Is something wrong with my processor?

Check to see if all four of the cpu cooler's push-pins are fully seated/attached to the motherboard.

It sounds like one or more of the cooler's push-pins are not fully seated and this will cause your cpu to run much hotter.

If you remove the cpu cooler to inspect the thermal grease pattern, you will need to thoroughly clean off all of the existing thermal grease from the cpu and cooler using 90% pure rubbing alcohol and reapply new thermal grease.

If the stock cooler is making full contact with your cpu, the thermal grease pattern will have a thin, even coating and look like this:

Re: Is something wrong with my processor?

There is nothing wrong with your CPU or system, or at worst it is to early to decide something is wrong.

It is well worth checking that your stock cooler is mounted correctly. You should be able to see the pins on the cooler with the side panel removed, your case should have a large enough opening in the mother board tray to let you check that. The white tip of the pin must be completely through the hole in the board, and the black internal pin expander pushed all the way down. If one pin is not right, the cooling will be compromised.

Please believe me when I tell you that Haswell processors run hot, the stock cooler cannot handle stress testing at stock CPU speeds!! What you are getting for stress test temps with the stock cooler is normal. Your case probably does not have enough fans to keep the internal air at a low enough temperature when using the stock cooler, but 10 case fans can't make up for the stock cooler.

All default BIOS settings will not allow the CPU to cool down at idle. In the BIOS check that the following options are set to Enabled, not Auto:

In OC Tweaker Screen: Intel SpeedStep, CPU Integrated VR Efficiency Mode

In Advanced, CPU Configuration Screen: CPU C States Support, Enhanced Halt State (C1E), CPU C3 State Support, CPU C6 State Support, CPU C7 State Support. Also, set Package C State Support to C6 or C7.

On the Exit screen, click on Save and Exit.

When in Windows, select your Power Plan, whatever it is, and click on Change plan settings, then click Change advanced power settings. Scroll down and find Processor power management, and click on the + symbol to reveal Minimum processor state. Set that to 5% if it isn't that now. Click Apply and Ok.

Both of these things must be done to get your processor to idle at its lowest speed and run cooler. Let us know how this works and we can move on from there.

Again, a Haswell processor, even (particularly) a DC like yours, will not be adequately cooled when using the stock Intel CPU cooler when running CPU stress tests. The stock cooler is not designed to handle 100% CPU usage loads for more than a second or two. I've had a Haswell CPU since they were first released, and if you knew what some people do to get lower temperatures when over clocking, you would be surprised. You are hardly the first person to be surprised by the temps of their Haswell processor, there are thousands of threads like yours in PC forums.

What are you comparing these temperatures with, an AMD system or an older Intel system?

What are you using to check the CPU and other temperatures?

The OP bailed out on us, and has posted his identical post from here on the OCN Intel Processor forum.

Is something wrong with my processor?

The responses there are the same as ours basically, which the OP has decided are correct and has followed up with over there.

Re: Is something wrong with my processor?

As for the haswell temp, my pentium G3420 sits on stock cooler, mini ITX case in cabinet, not much ventilation around, my idle temps are 30-32c, while most demanding titles (Sleeping Dogs Definitive Ed, Alien Isolation, Evil Within, NFS Rivals - every game on high/ ultra 1360x768 as my TV's native) give temps up to 56-58c after few hours of gameplay, not more.
The safe bar for haswells is 72c so quite plenty to it, going above that number should be worrying, I would advise to reapply thermal paste and resit cooler.
