  • Xeon X5460: SLANP vs SLBBA?

I've been doing some research into overclocking the Xeon X5460 and I've come across some terms I don't really know the meaning of and can't find definitions for. After doing some searching around it would appear that this processor comes in SLANP, SLBBA, and SLANP SLBBA architectures. From some of the conversations on forums I've seen, SLBBA is better for overclocking. Can anyone tell me why, and what SLANP and SLBBA actually mean? Is it just a model number?

Re: Xeon X5460: SLANP vs SLBBA?

The following links provide detailed specifications:
    Intel Xeon X5460 - EU80574KJ087N / AT80574KJ087N (BX80574X5460A)
    SLANP (Intel Xeon X5460)
    SLBBA (Intel Xeon X5460)

With many or most Intel processors, the newer models with EO stepping often overclock somewhat better than the older models with CO stepping.

    From the SLBBA link:
    Notes on sSpec SLBBA
    • OEM parts are available starting from Oct 6, 2008.
    • Boxed processors are available starting from Aug 29, 2008.
    • Changes in E0 stepping: new XSAVE and XRSTORE instructions, ACNT2 feature used for determining processor utilization, halide-free package.

    Two threads worth looking at:

The second thread also includes overclocking with an EP45-UD3P motherboard with an X5470 cpu.

Thanks profJim. I had found those first couple of pages you linked but wasn't able to decipher much. I've since looked up what "core stepping" means and I have a better idea now. Basically the E0 is a revision of the C0 with improvements in architecture. This is what I had suspected but I wasn't sure exactly in what way the E0 was an improvement.

I'll start looking through those threads you linked.
