    Hi all,

Can someone tell me if my GA-X58-UD7 is too old for a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD.

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, all working fine.
I then decided it would be a good idea to take out the 1TB Western Digital Black Cavier HDD and replace it with the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB SSD.

I started by Cloning HDD to SSD using Samsung Migration Tool - Failed.
So next step used Acronis 2015 Clone Tool, this took 4 Hours but did work, disconnected HDD and connected SSD, boot up - Failed.
After a bit of reading, went into Bios and changed the controller from IDE to AHCI under Integrated Peripherals, could not find anything else to change,
Re-boot and success it loaded my cloned Windows 10, so decided to install Samsung Magician and see what was happening.

First issue, where the serial number is it has a box for Verification this failed.
Then check speeds and was not impressed but noted in red at the top is said AHCI not enabled, but it was in Bios.

    Seq Read 337
    Seq Write 223
    Random Read 8985
    Random Write 15861

I read that you need to go into registry and alter the msahi bit it's not there, then for 64bit its storahci, found that but already set to "0"

I read that if the SSD authentication fails it's do with AHCI not being enabled, but it is in Bios.

Next step tried a clean install, but same problems as above, so this now leaves me thinking the MB is too old being 2010.

SSD is out now and back with the WD HDD, but would be great if I could get the SSD to work.

    What do you guys think.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: GA-X58-UD7 and Samsung 850 EVO 1TB

It's unlikely that your X58-UD7 is too old!!

With my P35-DS4 (rev 2.0) I had no problem cloning win7 from my hard drive to my Samsung 256GB 840 Pro ssd.
    I did a clean win7 installation to my EP45-UD3P (rev: 1.1) using two Crucial 250GB BX100 ssd's in raid 0.

I assume that your hard drive has your O/S and other non-O/S folders and that you cloned the complete contents of your WD Caviar Black drive to your new ssd.

Connect your Samsung 1TB 850 EVO ssd to your system as a data drive, where you boot using your hard drive and run the newest version of the Samsung Magician software where you first verify that your 850 EVO has the latest firmware. Update the ssd firmware if there is a newer version.

Run AS SSD or Anvil's Storage Utilities benchmarks on your ssd and post the results.
The Anvil link is from the first post at Anvil's Storage Utilities
This will tell us if partition alignment is OK and which driver is used by your ssd.

Is your ssd and hard drive both connected to the Intel sata2 ports?

If your hard drive and ssd are using the Intel AHCI driver this is a good sign.
It will probably be easier for you if your ssd is an exact cloned copy of your hard drive where both drives are running using the AHCI driver.

A web search using: windows 10 how to enable ahci might provide helpful links for enabling AHCI to the cloned ssd, such as:
Enabling AHCI after installing Win10 TP - Microsoft Community

For now, do not have any additional hard drives connected to your system when you try to boot using your ssd.

      Re: GA-X58-UD7 and Samsung 850 EVO 1TB

      Hi profjim,
I cloned using a usb/sata adapter, which seemed ok, however I'm 100% sure the Western Digital is connected as IDE and does contain my O/S and Non O/S folders.
When I cloned the first time and rebooted it would not boot, so tried a different clone tool but also realised that maybe I should set in bios AHCI instead of IDE on re-boot, did this and this did boot and everything seemed ok other than Authentication of S/N failed which seemed odd and the benchmarks seemed low, and in small red print it was saying AHCI is not enabled when viewing in Magjician.

I will follow your instructions above and report back, and thanks for the help, much appreciated.

        Re: GA-X58-UD7 and Samsung 850 EVO 1TB

The specifications for your X58A-UD7 (rev: 1.0) include:
        South Bridge:

        Storage Interface:

        6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATA2_0, SATA2_1, SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA2_5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10

        Marvell 9128 chip:
        2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3_6, GSATA3_7) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, and RAID 1

        * SATA3 RAID 0 4x and SATA3 2x performance are maximum theoretical values. Actual performance may vary by system configuration.
        * SATA3 SSDs are not recommended for use in RAID 0 mode on Marvell SE9128 ports.

        GIGABYTE SATA2 chip:
1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices
        2 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (GSATA2_8, GSATA2_9) supporting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD

        JMicron JMB362 chip:
2 x eSATA 3Gb/s connectors (eSATA/USB Combo) on the back panel sup- porting up to 2 SATA 3Gb/s devices
Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, and JBOD

        iTE IT8720 chip:
1 x floppy disk drive connector supporting up to 1 floppy disk drive

As I recall the best and most stable performance will be with your ssd connected to the Intel sata2 port (SATA2_0) and the Marvell sata3 ports are not as stable as the Intel sata2 ports.

Boot into your bios with the WD hard drive as your O/S boot drive.

At the main bios screen, go into the Integrated Peripherals sub menu and make the following changes:
ICH SATA Control Mode -------- [AHCI]
SATA Port0-3 Native Mode ----- [Enabled]

I don't know if this is sufficient for windows 10 to boot using AHCI mode or if you will need to make some changes in the windows registry.
With windws 7 one or more registry changes are required to let the Intel sata2 controller's AHCI mode work with an existing O/S installation.

From the main bios panel, press the F9 key and let us know what bios version you are using.

My EP45-UD3P and your X58A-UD7 both use the ICH10R south bridge.

          Re: GA-X58-UD7 and Samsung 850 EVO 1TB

          profjim,

          Some success almost there.

First of all I switch to Safe Mode then shut down.
Then in Bios changed in Integrated Peripherals the setting for IDE to AHCI, then Enabled Sata Port 0-3 Native Mode.
Re-booted, now with Windows 10 in Safe Mode, change back to normal mode and reboot.
Booted into Windows 10 no problem.
Clear partitions on SSD to start over then used Aomei Backupper to clone O/S.
Once done disconnected WD HDD and connected SSD using same plugs, no other drives connected.
Boots into Windows 10, run AS SSD so I can attach screen shot, below.

I note there is still a problem in Red, any help on this ?
What do you think of speeds, is this because of the pciide bad ?

            Re: GA-X58-UD7 and Samsung 850 EVO 1TB

Glad to hear that you're making some progress.

I would expect your sequential read and write results to be near or slightly below the 300MB/s sata2 limit.
More importantly, your 4K and 4K-Thrd results should be somewhat higher than my single, non-raid ssd read and write scores.

pciide - bad means that the storage controller is in IDE mode.

The green number shows that the partition is 4K-aligned.

To get your drive in AHCI mode, it looks like additional steps will be needed.

Running a single ssd in Raid mode is virtually the same as using AHCI mode.

With windows 7 I set the following registry entries to 0 (zero) so that I would only need to set the proper storage controller setting in the bios to AHCI, raid or IDE and reboot:
            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Msahci\Start
            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Pciide\Start
            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\iaStorV\Start

It's possible that windows 10 will need to follow a procedure similar to making an AHCI change in windows 8 or 8.1.
I'll check this out later today to see if I can find a solution.

You can try a reasonably quick possible solution by doing a clean windows 8 or 10 installation with the bios settings set to AHCI mode before you start.

No, the storage controller drivers should be from microsoft and/or Intel.

                    Re: GA-X58-UD7 and Samsung 850 EVO 1TB

Oops I installed drivers from Gigabyte as the microsoft ones said 2006 on my machine.
However this still made no difference, I went back to the Bios for another look, then I noticed in Integrated Peripherals, although I had changed at the top of the page for IDE to AHCI and also Enabled Sata Port 0-3 Native Mode, I had not realised the there was a scroll down, upon which the port channels are there with 6-7 set to IDE.
Changed that and rebooted, Windows would load, it tried twice then gave options, I chose option 4 and it rebooted, to my surprise.

Ran AS SSD again and this is what I now have, does this look about right.

You're welcome, glad to help out.
It's good to see that windows 10 is alive and well.

I have found that the results from AS SSD and Anvil Storage Utilities are nearly identical.
I prefer the Anvil results because it provides more information about the system.

                        Looking good.

Using AHCI or raid mode with a single drive provides better performance than using pciide mode.

Gigabyte replied to my request about if I should update the Bios when I first had issues, the reply today just said update Bios and see

They did attach a zip file with bios F9D, I believe my bios is F7.

Now I have the SSD working do you think its worth updating the bios, or should I leave as is.

                          Thanks.

                            Re: GA-X58-UD7 and Samsung 850 EVO 1TB

                            Two thoughts:
                            1. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
                            2. The F9d mod bios might offer useful improvements.

A quick web search shows that the F9d bios can be downloaded from several different places. Are all of versions identical? Probably not!!
What specific changes or improvements are in the F9d version that Gigabyte sent you? No one knows for sure.

It's not difficult to determine the option rom (orom) components in the Award bios, but there's no way of knowing what changes Gigabyte made that deal with other features or improvements.

I found a recent x58a-ud7 (rev 1.0) thread at win-raid.com that dealt with quite a few problems when flashing with different F9d bios versions.
The OP in his thread was looking to optimize raid 0 ssd performance.
His thread is x58a-ud7 bios problems with F9d mod bios

The OP had some problems with the Marvell performance while he was trying a few of the modded bioses.
Keep in mind that the win-raid forum is mostly used by people who want to modify their bios for best performance with raid configurations.

I can report the orom versions in your current and new F9d bioses if you post a link to each bios version from a file sharing site such as Dropbox.
You can save a copy of your current bios to a floppy, usb or any partition that has a FAT file format.
The information would include information similar to this:
                            GA-X58A-UD7 (rev1) BIOS F9d mod
                            Modified with :
                            Intel SATA RAID 11.6.0.1702
                            Intel SATA AHCI 1.20E
                            Realtek LAN 2.45 to 2.58
                            JMicron ROM 1.07.28
                            Marvell BIOS Version 1.0.0.1033 / Firmware 2.2.0.1125

                            Keep in mind:
                            1. the Intel Sata AHCI 1.20E version hasn't been updated for quite a while.
                            2. flashing the motherboard's bios might brick your motherboard, even if you do everything correctly.

I assume that your ssd, hard drive and optical disk are all connected to the Intel sata2 ports.
