  • Worth upgrading from i5-2500 to i5-6500?

I've been running my trusty i5-2500 (Sandy Bridge) for a long time now. It has treated me well.

I've gradually updated to using an SSD and an Nvidia 970 over the years, and my system seems to still be running smoothly, apart from some annoying, random lockups that I've had since the beginning (more than likely from my motherboard, an early revision Asus P8P67 Pro).

I'm primarily a hobbyist. I develop games on the side and do a bit of 3D art. I never overclock.

Is it finally worth upgrading my processor and motherboard? I've also read some reports that Skylake might have some kind of processing bug, and that Kaby Lake is right around the corner with a new chipset. Should I wait for any of that?

Full disclosure, my system doesn't feel slow or sluggish. I'm mostly concerned about replacing my processor and motherboard before they fail. They've been running for almost 5 and a half years now. Talk about a work horse. :P

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The short answer is, no, it's not really worth the expense for the comparatively minor incremental additional performance you'll see. Make sure you have your data and system backed up in the event something does give out on your computer. Meanwhile, I would wait to what AMD's Zen performs like, which should be available later this year, before your next upgrade.

Thanks. I'm amazed at the staying power of the i5-2500. Guess I'll hold onto my pennies until next year.
