  • X5460 Overclocking ?!

    Dear TweakTown Community,

so I managed to get my hands on a modded X5460 and two motherboards which were 771 ready.
So the first one is an Asus Striker II Formula. I currently installed 6GB DDR2 Kingston RAMs on it.
I plan to use an SSD on that System and a HD 6950 2GB GDDR5 to see what this Setup is capable off.
I also own an Asus P5G41T-M LX motherboard with 2x2GB DDR3 XMS 3 1333MHz Ram. So my question is what board is capable of a better oc result and which should i generally take for overclocking since i have no experience at all in overclocking I seem a little bit lost. Both Boards are already patched with the microcodes. I really wanna get the best out of this rack. But I really don't know how to start. I've read a few threads and I've tried to overclock the P5G41T-M LX but the results were awfull. I dont even know where to start. Ive tried this one. I used slightly different settings them him.

I also read this article. Basically what I wanna know for the beginning is what Mainboard should I choose and how to start the Overclocking right away?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: X5460 Overclocking ?!

The Asus Striker II Formula will overclock much better, but the Nvidia Nforce chipset boards can be a real PITA when using quad core processors.

We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

We can best help you after you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs
portion of your forum profile at the bottom of the profile page or in your forum signature.
Be sure to include brand names and model numbers.
When you are done editing or creating your hardware list, save the settings.
Be sure to include the name and model number for your ram and also include the motherboard's bios version.

There have been 22 bios versions for your Striker motherboard and the newest bios versions should be best because they will have fixes for cpu and memory incompatibility.

Before you start overclocking you must make sure that your system is stable by running multiple Prime95 tests (Small FFT, Large FFT and Blend) for 8 hours or longer.
Check out http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...emory-etc.html for more information.

Check out the following reviews to see the good, the bad and the ugly for your motherboard.
The following thread is very long and it has a lot of excellent information:
Hopefully many or most of the problems that they encountered have been fixed with the most recent bios versions.

I have no doubt that we will encounter FSB wall and FSB hole problems that have been around since the earlier Nforce 650i and 680i motherboards. I have no doubts that memory compatibility problems will probably be an issue because this has been an issue with the Nforce boards.

You will need to take detailed notes about the bios settings that are used and details about all problems that you encounter.

I look at the Nforce boards like girl friends from hell; when they are good, they are really, really good but when they're bad, they are terrible.

Very Important!! The motherboard's North Bridge runs very hot and often causes problems because it's temperatures are too high. You will need to provide additional localized cooling by placing a fan so that it directs cooling air directly to the NB.
