  • Games hang problem

It's not that i want to bother you but i tried posting in this forum and other forums but i didnt get the solution to my problem. I tried the www.tweaktown, www.guru3d.com and www.viaarena.com forums but no solution.

Here's my problem and my system specs.

    Maxtor 2B020H1
    Quantum Bigfoot_CY2160A
    IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM 44XS
    VIA Apollo KX133(host bridge)
    VIA VT82C686A(south bridge)
    Nvidia Geforce2 MX/MX400
    AMD Athlon 600MHz (L1 cache: 128.0 Kb, L2 cache: 512.0 Kb)
    Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG (08-Mar-2000)
    V.771AS 8371-686A-6A6LKJ19C-00
    256 Mb (261 572 Kb)
    ATAPI CD-ROM 44X(F:)
    NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400: 800 x 600 - High Color (16 bit)
    VIA AC'97 Audio
    Realtek RTL8029(AS) Ethernet Adapt
    Microsoft Windows 98 SE U.S. English 4.10 (build 2222 A)
U.S. Robotics 56K FAX EXT PnP
    Default Monitor

I've done a clean reformat of C: while i backup my stuff in a partition of C:, that is E: . And then an installation of Windows 98SE. Many times i have done this ... many many times.

The problem is after i installed all my drivers and games .. when i run them .. freezes/lock ups/hangs occurs.

I've always installed the VIA drivers 1st. Then the IDE_MPD3014 drivers i obtained from www.viaarena.com .Then i install all my other drivers. I tried installing them is safe mode or my via drivers last. Nothing worked. Many different versions of drivers i tried for my graphic card and the via ones ....

These are how the games hang ... if i dont install the Via drivers the is what happens. Counterstrike runs fine in d3d or opengl mode at even the highest resolution when i create a lan game. however when playing online games, d3d works but opengl doesnt. It cant join game. The countdown b4 joining games goes to zero and says unable to join game.

As for Warcraft 3, after the splash screen and the intro video (blizzard stuff) i get a black screen and the background music is heard. But nothing else works not even Ctrl-alt-del.

These are the results after i installed Via drivers.
Sometimes counterstrike online and opengl will run perfectly good with nice fps(72-99fps) but warcraft 3 gives random lock ups.
sometimes counterstrike will hang when joining game.(the console going off screen when joined game)

As for Warcraft 3, the lock ups appears random, sometimes real fast sometimes it takes sometime.

i tried changing my bios settings as well but nothing helps. AGP 2x i tried and agp aperture size of 128 and 64 also i tried. Tried disabling Video Shadow as well.

Please help me out. This is really bothering me. I need to play the games. My holidays now. Need a job and some games and to run photoshop, html stuff and others.

You don't mention anything on temperatures. Perhaps your system is overheating?

nop i checked temperature at the bios .. not even half of the max temperature ...
      thnx for the suggestion anyway
      anymore ideas ?

one more thing i just realised ...
when counterstrike dont work ( hang when the consoles goes up as soon as game is joined ) , i get this error message

      Warning udp_opensocket:port27015 setsockopt IP_MULTICAST_LOOP:WSAENOPROTOOPT

however wc3 has no error msg .. it just hangs

u dont run firewalling software at al?

maybe try removing the network card/replacing it temporarily

more importantly what have you looked at in the bios, is it possible something is overclocked or running slightly out-of-spec? coz in all the stuff u mentioned u have not said anything about a bios/cmos reset..

I'm having just about the same issue. Except mine stalls for 8 to 9 seconds then continues. This happens in 3DMark & Trainz a graphics intense sim (game). This just started happening within the last 4 or so days.

Here is the old system it happened on:

            AMD Athlon XP 2000 +
            MSI KT4 Ultra MB
            1024 meg PC2700 333 ddr ram
Maxtor 60 gig HDD 5400 rpm
Maxtor 40 gig HDD 5400 rpm
            Asus 8420 GeForce 4 TI 4600 128 m ddr mem
            Windows XP Home
            TDK Velo CDRW 482448
            Creative DVD 16X
            Enermax 350 watt PSU

New system: 2 changes the rest is as above less the 40g HDD
Asus A7N8X Deluxe Bios ver 1002.003 beta
Western Digital WD1200JB HDD Special Edition 120 gig HDD w 8meg cache set as Master
            CPU Temp 44C/111F
            MB Temp 30C/86F
I know how you guys hate when people say this, but I have all of the latest drivers installed.
This is a fresh install of XP Home Ed.
Please help me solve this annoying problem.
If you need any further info, please let me know. My email is currently not behaving thanks to that thing Saturday, so I'll have to check back off and on.
Thanks for your patience and help,
            Al

The problem is solved, it was a heat issue. The fan on my GeForce 4 had quit working. I went and bought another fan and now I'm good to go!! :p

I had a geforce 2 ddr overheating on me once during a brutal game session, it just shut of the signal output to the monitor wich went black of course, probably some safety function that turned of the power to the card when the gpu temp went to high, i just replaced the incredibly small fan with a better more powerful one and then the screen never went black again during gaming...

And that was a gf2, i reccon gf4 gpu's produce ALOT more heat.
