  • Barton & Athlon64 Update.

Just been doin' some readin' around since I have a moment of free time so I'll copy and paste this from the Inquirer.
4000+ by end of the year, and Paris in the the Autumn

By Mike Magee: Friday 17 January 2003, 11:00

TEC CHANNEL has just published AMD and Intel roadmaps for its Athlon 64 chips in 2003.
The lengthy article says that AMD will introduce Athlon 64s in 2800+, 3100+ and 3400+ versions, in Q1 and the roadmaps, pictures of which you can find on page three of the article, confirms that there will be 333MHz Bartons initially at speeds of 3000+, 2800+ and 2500+.

The Bartons will live on to become 3200+ chips in Q3/Q4 of this year.

Meanwhile, the roadmaps suggest that Athlon 64s with 1MB of L2 will launch in Q2, to be followed by 3700+ speeds in Q3, and 4000+ speeds in Q4.

In Q3, AMD will introduce a "Paris" version of the Athlon 64 with only 256K L2 cache, rather than 1MB, and at speeds of 3200+. There will be a 3500+ version of this in Q4.

You can find the front page of this article, hereThe continuing mystery of AMD Clawhammers and Bartons
So I hope this answers some ppl's questions. :devil win

Yes I think that I'll build that P4 setup first and wait for a Barton to come along for the other case. :devil win

            Current AthlonXP = Athlon64
            Current AthlonMP = Opteron

            Right?

What kind of improvements will there be on the Opteron over the Athlon64?

              No wrong.

              AthlonXP = Palamino/Thoroughbreds A & B/Barton

AthlonMP = Dual support of the above mentioned cores

Athlon64 = Clawhammer (single on die memory controller)

Opteron = Sledgehammer (dual on die memory controllers)

The first two will be budget solutions in the end (the Duron dies) while the third take's up the top end positions and the last will be aimed at purely the business sector. ;)

Wiggo, i understand the core names and what product name they apply to. ;)
I was wondering if the Athlon64 was what will phase out the AthlonXP and if the Opteron is what going to phase out the AthlonMP... i know they are all going to coexist for awhile, but i havent seen the RoadMap so im not sure where stuff is going...

The Duron is the only one planned to go as the others still continue to show on the roadmap and should continue so for about 2 years. ;)
