networking w/ XP pro

I asked a buncha people about the file transfer wizard in XP and everyone told me to get a crossover cable. I did that, and when I run the file transfer wizard, it says I either need to set up a small network or have a serial cable. I set up a network the other day with a different computer, but this time it won't work! I enabled the sharing of the root file, but still nothing. It says I don't have permission, but I have admin priviledges on both. I can see the shared folders, I just can't open them! Is there a step-by-step tutorial out there somewhere?
