  • Low Sound Volume

So after building my new system, my sound refuses to go loud. The volume control is all set to full, but the speakers sound a lot quieter then on my old system. They are only stereo speakers, from IBM, without volume control, but they used to be a lot louder then this, is it possible that its simply the AC'97 drivers not being compatible with older speakers? Id think they would assum most people would have volume control built into the speakers, but it would be nice if it was usable for all speakers.

My specs are in my sig, its a KT400 chipset. Im planning on buying some new speakers, im lookin at the Altec Lansing 5.1 90 watt set, however I think I need a new HDD first:(

    Thanks.

Did you turn the sound volume level up in Windows also?

Windows meaning the lil speaker in the task bar? Yep. Is there another way to turn it up?

If your speakers have no volume control, then they are passive speakers with no amplification. They are powered by the signal level from the soundcard. Sound cards used to provide a higher level of amplification on the card itself when this type of speaker was more common. Some cards even had a jumper to increase output from 2w to 4w. The higher level from the cards lead to distortion though when fed into amplified speakers. When the use of amplified speakers became almost universal, soundcards stopped amping the signal and left that up to the speakers. So, new soundcard + old speakers = low volume. Newer speakers will fix the problem.
