Copy CDs to Comp!

Hey peeps! I could do wite some advice about copying cds to my computer - i want to copy the cd directly onto the hardrive meaning not through real player or wmp. I want to be able to move the files and basically see them!:smokin: Or does anyone know how to acsess the file which have been scanned via WMP? or know where they are stored? Any help would be grand cheers guys! :cheers:

You want to SEE the files? Now thats another confusing thing? What is the meaning of seeing the files?
What do you mean by "scanned by WMP"? do you mean "Played by WMP"?

well ill take first shot. If you mean copied to hdd using WMP ya should find the in C:\Documents and Settings\"your user name"\My Documents\My Music in WinXP, or more simply in the My Music Folder of My Documents. If you want to copy without going through WMP you can just go to My Computer and click the CD drive its in and you can highlight all the files and right click and click copy, then make a file on your hdd and right click the blank space and click paste. Or in WinXP you can highlight them all and click Copy Selected Items and put them in your preferred directory. I hope this is what you was reffering too

amd_man had the right idea with where files are stored.

Audio tracks are stored as actual data tracks on a CD, not actually as 'files'. When you put the CD in the drive, or open it up in WMP, it may come up as trackXX.cda, but in truth that isn't really the song itself.

So, to get them onto your hard drive, you need to use software to 'rip' them. WMP does this, but a lot of other programs do it as well. But, this means you can't simply copy the files from the CD to your HDD.

maybe you should get a program like nero. at least you can follow your footsteps.

i don't think that is possible dude. the only thing you will get a shortcut to the track on CD, and when the CD is not in CD-ROM drive then i wonder how you will play the songs.

As beefy said you gotta use a software to rip those tracks from CD to HD.

Nero for CD ripping. :?: kewl...never tried it but will give it a shot pretty soon! :thumb:

This does work as i often do it. May be becuz i have seperate partitions though:confused:

Cheers for all the info! Alas Amd_ i have tried doing the old copy and paste of the CD to HDD and it does indeed create a shortcut to the "file" which cannot be played without the cd bein in like beefy and asklepios said (sos rugby i don't have a partitioned harddrive). However im gonna check in My music to see if WMP has shoved them in there! I have nero and the thought never occured to me to use that and it makes a lotta sense cheers C_Deck! Ill report back to say what happens prob later today.

Wahay! i have it sorted! The files which were scanned by WMP were put in the My Music file allowing me to move them and rename them! cheers AMD for that one! Nero on the other hand was a lot harder i couldn't seem to copy them to another file in the same way - this maybe becase i went through the wizzard and created a compilation - when you save the tracks it saves the compliation instead!

C_Deck would you mind telling me how to do it on nero? I would like to find out if its any easier!

Anyway for those who are intrested in burning songs straight onto the HDD heres how:

1. Insert CD, open up WMP 9 and go onto copy cd from file tab.
2. De-select any of the tick boxes for tracks you don't want to be burnt.
2. Name all the tracks if your not on the net or the albumn info cannot be found.
3. Press the copy button and press no copy right button.
4. Wait for the selected tracks to be scanned to the HDD.
5. Open up My Music and look for Untitled Albumns or around and about. If you named the files BEFORE you burnt them the all the song files and main albumn file will have the right names. If not then youll have to rename them there!
6. Hay Presto your all done and you can do what ever you want with these music files!
