  • Optimal Win XP Swap File Size

Just wondering what the optimal swap file size would be for a pc running Win XP Pro w/512mb of RAM? Currently I have it set so that windows is in control, but playing games like C&C Generals I get a very slight stutter, with a little HDD light flash. The rest of my pc is running like a top so I figure it's gotta be clearing the RAM or caching into the swap file...?

standard i was told to make your swap file 1.5 to 2 times the ammount of ram in your system..so for 512 guess configure it to be something like 1024mb.. you have your swapfile on a seperate partition

a guy that used to work for M$ told me that the amount of RAM + 14 MB is the optimal size for the paging file.
any more than that is dosn't improve anything

but whatever you chose for your swapfile, it needs to be a fixed size. don't let windows arrange it for you

Generally, I recommend you make your swapfile and RAM total to around 1GB - 1.2GB. So with 512MB of RAM, set the swapfile to a fixed min/max of 768MB.

This may sound like a lot, but for those with higher end computers and graphics cards with larger memory, the amount of textures loaded into memory for the latest games is VERY large. Sometimes the combined memory used by a game can be 800MB or more, hence my recommendation of 1GB for RAM+swapfile.

I run 1GB of RAM, but I still set swapfile to 100MB, because some games and programs rely on a swapfile existing (eg. Morrowind) otherwise you may get crashes to desktop. Don't set swapfile to zero.
