Installing a raid0 array for your boot drive does not require any extra hardware other than an additional drive.
Your friend will need to select an appropriate stripe size for the array.

    Yesterday I installed a raid0 setup using two Crucial BX100 250GB ssds with a stripe size = 32KB.
The size of the new array is 466GiB which is the "same" as a 500GB setup.
After I completed the win7 sp1 installation, I then let windows update install over one terabyte of updates.

When these steps were completed I then used partitioning software to shrink the raid array to 360GiB where this leaves 22% of the array as unallocated space for ssd over-provisioning.
With adequate O/P space the ssd performance will be better and the ssd will have a longer life.

    15Q vs 16Q
Q stands for a quad channel memory kit.
The number is the memory's Cas Latency spec for each kit.
Faster memory speeds often require higher Cas Latency.

I'm not sure why some of the G.Skill kits with the same speed have slightly different latency settings.

For five dollars, got the Q16, what the heck? I think I am all done except for another Samsung Pro 500 ssd. Will keep you informed as things progress over the next couple weeks. If you think of anything along the way please let me know. Any extra little parts you might think of that might be needed for the put together. Thanks again.

Now monitors. From what I can tell uhd does not come with Nvidia enabled 3d. The hd monitors do. I got the Nvidia GTX 980. Would like to get a compatible monitor for it, around 26 inches, give or take. Since the GTX 980 has hdmi 2.0, that seems the way to go for connectivity. There only seems to be a couple monitors that have 2.0 available. Other issues seems the monitor needs to be able to take advantage of all the advancements the GTX is offering. Have gone to several manufacture web sites, and many do not have all the specifications showing. I was thinking you may have reviewed some monitors recently, or others on this thread may have just purchased a new monitor. Thanks again to all.

Funny you should ask, about an hour ago I looked at the http://forums.tweaktown.com/publicat...or-review.html.

The problem is, it looks like a single GTX 980 video card won't be adequate to make the most of this ACER monitor.

It sounds like it's an awesome monitor!!

Does not look like it is 3d either. Any advantage of display port vs hdmi 2.0? What it looks like I will do is for now get a hd 144mz refresh, with Nvidia enabled everything, and hdmi 2.0 connectivity. There seems to be a few of these, and around the 500 dollar range.

I can't help you with the HDMI vs Display Port advantages/disadvantages.
I don't think that you can get away with using a video converter to adapt one to the other.

Everything I've read says that image quality with IPS, PLS or similar designs is far superior to the standard TN monitors.

I'm not a gamer, but it looks like a 144MHz monitor is much nicer than a 60MHz monitor.

Can you go to a local Fry's or WorstBuy to check out monitors in person?
Do any of your computer friends have higher end monitors that you can try out?

    Decisions, decisions, decisions....

I can go by either of those places. I have been so busy at work and trying to compare everything. I see that my graphics card is not an Nvidia, but the Asus Strix GTX 980, which is good with hdmi 2.0 and uhd, and I don't see anything about Nvidia enabled, so maybe any good monitor with hdmi 2.0 will work great. Will do some comparisons. Will keep you informed.

I did some checking and it looks like hdmi 2.0 is primarily for a few high end (very expensive) professional monitors and this will probably change in the near future. The way I see it, you need to find out the best video card to monitor interface that will give you the performance you need now and for several years. You can certainly expand your video hardware in the future with an SLI setup with multitiple monitors.

Do some web searches such as: hdmi 1.4 vs displayport or hdmi 1.2 vs 1.3 vs 1.4 performance and you should master the basics pretty quickly. By reading GTX 980 reviews from the best review sites, such as PCPER, HardOCP, or other well respected sites you will quickly learn the capabilities and limits of your video card and how well it performs at various resolutions. A search using 2k vs 4k along with video resolution or gaming or hardware requirements will provide you with a good basic understanding. Maybe some of your experienced computer friends can best help you once you've mastered some of the basics.

Another topic to consider is how high will you want to overclock your cpu, memory and gpu, but you can deal with this later. An overclocked system needs to be stress tested for many, many hours to ensure that your system is stable. I have three stable bios profiles that I use at different times; stock, mid-speed and the highest settings that are not extreme. Given the age of my hardware I'm a bit more conservative than I was in the past.

Thanks for the response. In going to the Asus site, their 980 has some Nvidia items. So I guess it is 3d compatible. I will do as you suggest and go to those sites. Part of the issue is if you go to say, newegg, and look at some of these monitors, they mention hdmi and nothing else. In doing more research on a specific monitor or two, they might be hdmi 2.0 ready. Looks like there are two or three 3d, hd monitors that use hdmi 2.0 for around 500. Like you not being heavy into gaming, will probably have my friend do a mid point performance, and be completely happy with that. Ignorance is bliss. Unlike many people, I like 3d movies and old photos. A few years ago bought a Sony HD 3d video cam corder. I like using it and watching it. My main goal still remains to have a future proof system for a few years. Then onto a new build, or update this one, which is one reason I got a full tower, to assist in any future upgrades. Thanks again.

    You're welcome.

One thing I like to do is do download user manuals for hardware that I'm considering. You can then quickly check the features and specifications without having to return to the manufacturer's web site. Keep in mind that Newegg and other vendors sometimes make mistakes with the specs. Last year I bought a new power supply and Newegg's web page for the psu had the specs for a similar unit that was first made several years earlier. To make matters worse, the model numbers for both units were very similar, but there were some several design improvements with the newer model. To make matters worse, the web page said that the psu had a 5 year warranty, but the newer model had a 7 year warranty. It turns out that the psu reviews and the psu manufacturer had the correct information.

I'm looking to buy a 27" 2560 x 1440 IPS or PLS monitor for my photo editing.
One of the most important features I require is a monitor to pivots to a portrait position and I really don't want to spend an extra $50 - $80 more for a decent monitor stand when I'm spending $400 or more for the monitor.
