    Hi Guys I have just put togeather a new system and need a little help, I have,
    Gigabyte GA-VAX mobo
    AMD 2200+
    Geforce 4 MX 440,
    When I enable the "top performance" setting in the bios, the system will not boot up and asks for the file - system32\ntoskrnl.exe to be installed, anybody know why, and how to solve this, also, when I run soldier of fortune 2 with all the detail set to high in anything over 800x600 the system locks up.

    Also now that I have Easy Tune 4, which came with my mobo,
    can someone please give me a few ideas of what settings I should try for, my settings at the moment are,

    CPU= 138x13.5 giving 1863 Mhz

    CLOCK= DRAM 276, AGP 69, PCI 34

    VOLTAGE= CPU 1.94, AGP 1.5, DRAM 2.5

    Are these about right, what should I try to increase first if I want to try to o\c a bit more, CPU temp is currently at 39 c

    Any help would be relly apprecited, I need a little guidence from someone who knows a little more about over clocking than I do,

    Thanks, Rab

    Well, I haven't found out what "top performance" is for since the manual is written in Chinese 'Engrish', so I don't use it. I've done a ton of reading on this board since it's my first build. I've had the best luck leaving the voltage at default 1.65 and raising the fsb. I can go to 151. At 152 the denominator changes and it won't boot, presumably due to my cheapo ram.

    Why the heck do you have your voltage so high, anyway? And how are you keeping it so cool? With stock heatsink I'm at 44-49C.

    I get most of my info from amdforums.com.

    By the way, I can't get Easy Tune to save, so I just use it to test, then make changes in the bios. How about you?

    "Top Performance" means that the BIOS selects the most agressive timings and settings possible but it takes very good quality hardware to withstand them. Something (usually the memory) will not tollerate these and will either corrupt the loading files of the operating system or just a black screen will result. : peace2:

    I have realised now also that my easytune does not save the settings either, what is the point of that !! my voltage default always resets itself to 1.826, what is it supposed to be ?
    and how do I o/c on the board so that it will keep the setting
    I choose, and Wiggo, what make and type of ram do you recommend for my setup, so I can try to get the top performance to work, I am currently using PC2100 by Spec Tek, is this cr*p ?

    Your default voltage depends on the bios version you have running. If you don't know what the bios is, do a little research. As far as updating it, go to the Gigabtye site, dl the version for your board, then open the utility on the motherboard disk. It walks you through the process. For me, bios version f7 gives me a core voltage of 1.65, and f9 ups it to 1.75. I've found that I don't need more than 1.65 with my current setup, and it runs cooler.

    Anyway, in order to save changes, you need to make them in the bios. If you don't know how, I'd assume you need to read the manual!

    As far as your ram, pc2100 is the slowest ddr, and you might find SpekTek to be less than oc friendly. I've been lucky, since I didn't know a damn thing about ddr ram when I bought mine. I will be upgrading when I get a 333 mHz fsb processor.

    Good luck.

    Starting to feel a bit of a twit, but I am gettin` there, I have disguarded easy tune, and have upped my bus speed in bios to 145 for starters, it gives me 1957.50 Mhz and no problems so far,
    temp at cpu has accually droped to 34 C, probley cause voltage is back down to 1.842 ,I am only running bios version F4, but when I tried to update everything seemed to be going okay, but then it said my bios was write proctected, I have read the manual, but as somone said earlier, it is written in very bad english, almost laughable in some cases, unless that is you accually need to follow the instructions, as I unfortunatly do !!

    Have ya used the Q-Flash utility in BIOS or doesn't this board have that as it's pretty straight forward? :?:

    If that XP2200+ is a Thoroughbred "A" core then most won't get to 2GHz (1968MHz seems to be the limit of mine so far) but the "B" cores do much better (I'm not sure that these are too frequently available yet though). :devil win

    Wiggo, how do I tell what 'core' my cpu is without removing it from the board? Is it in Sandra somewhere? As you can see from my sig, I've been over the mountain with mine, and it is good. ;-) Also, where can I find a good tutorial on setting up ram timings?

    Rab, I still want to know how you're keeping things so cool.

    Thanks.

    Yes Sandra or WCPUID but I don't know what the code for a Thoroughbred "B" XP2200+ would be atm, though I've heard of them bein' around, but someone else here may know. ;)
