Today my boss told me i can build a computer for myself for my new office...and he will pay. It will have to be under 300 bucks...

So i decided to go with the first nForce from Asus because of Onboard Video and sound. Another thing is the network over there at my job is Win 98 (only 6 comps on to the network). HAs anyone used or suspect there will be comaptiablity problems with the mobo and Win 98? I will be sure to install 4 in 1 first thing b4 anything else after the fresh install.

    Thx =)

Memory is the only prob that I can see as Win9x can have stability probs with more than 256MB of memory so 2 x 128MB sticks are required but what quality you'll be able get at that size is the big question. ;)

I think i will be using crucial's DDR...maybe 128 for now...later on get another 128 of ram. Win98 doesn't require as much ram as say XP, Correct?

Correct as addressin' for 256MB of memory was all it was given though some can get away with more it's not often and really just a waste as it will show no improvement in speed. ;)

Ok, thank yu once again Wiggo...

Right now they have a sale on Newegg.com...on DDR 2100 of crucial for 45 bucks. A few posts back you mentioned 2 x 128 is this required or can i have just one stick?

But this is the original nforce...i was talking about...=)

I have to stay within 300 or 350 (pushing it)...and right now that the only mobo that affordable...to make it under 350 with shipping. It already includes decent video, sound, and LAN.

Right now these are the specs:
    1700+
    Original NForce Asus mobo
    256 (1 stick) memory
    56x cd rom
    floppy
    40GB WD SE (400JB)
and a mid tower decent looking case

Fans and cpu cooler will be supplied from me...and maybe the psu depends if i find a good case.

Yep still the same deal as with the nForce2, ya can use one but you'll be cripplin' it (more so when usin' the onboard video). ;)

so then for better performance you suggest 2 x 128 opposing the 1 x 256?

Another thing, you think this system will work fine with Win 98..?
