The rating on AMD chips is more for the non-computer saavy isn't it? If you tried explaining to a computer illiterate person how a chip that runs at 1.8ghz is just as fast or faster than an intel one that runs at 2.4 ghz they would get lost and go buy the pentium because the numbers are higher, and Intel has always gone with that it seems. Anyway thats my theory on the PR

Exactly! My dad was about to go out and buy a Dell 2.4GHz low end system for his business. I persuaded him to let me build him something better for the same price. I built him a 2400+ based system but on a better mobo, with more and better RAM, bigger and faster hard drive, better graphics, and a more optimized installation of Windows complete with system restore disks and my personal tech support.

He couldn't tell the difference in performance even if both systems were sitting side by side. All he cares about is the fancy case I picked up for him with the cute little glowing fan and the matching keyboard and monitor.

Dell and other vendors sell low end Intel based systems by advertising the CPU clock speed but never really mention about all the low end or dated componenets they install like the PC2100 RAM on an 845 chipset with integrated graphics (uugghh!). Most users are oblivious.

Im new here, but love post about the 2500 barton. Just wanted to give my to cents and get any feedback anyone has. I love my set up, its very stable, just wish I could get more out of the 8500DV. I have not played around with the ram timing yet, I see most people have ddr3200, Does any one have suggestions for me on ddr 2700.

    Thanks

    Keep this kind post going.:D

If you re-read Woody's statement, I think you'll see that he means the opposite of what you're thinking, which means you are both in agreement. ie. If cpus were as unreliable as Windows.

Woody, correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah that's pretty much what I meant. I was just trying to point out the advantages a competetive marketplace provides for consumers. If Microsoft had a rival in the OS business on this platform that competeted on the level that AMD competes against Intel, we would likely see much better progress on the software side and possibly more stable and reliable systems as a result.

Certainly our hardware is not the weak link in our computer systems today.

Have the Asus A7N8X DLX Ultra400 with a barton 2500 and 2 sticks of 256 meg Kingston HyperX PC3500. Upped the vcore to 1.775 from 1.65 and the Vdim from 2.6 to 2.7 Overclocked to 2230 (11x202) Extremely stable. Ran Prime95 for well over 24 hours without an error. As I write this my CPU temp is 35C and never climbs over 42-43 even hard gaming.

gkline: You may want to try backing off the Vcore voltage and see how well it runs. I'm not running mine nearly that high and it is very stable at that speed.

Woody Does yours run Prime95 without errors at those speeds without the vcore being raised?

I have experimented with the vcore at various settings and to run 11x202 I need a min of 1.775. That isn't that much of an increase.

i`d normally leave the vcore settings to auto, unless i just feel like setting it myself... btw, what`s the max fsb a pc2700 ddr`s capable of?
