I wanna put up a new rig. I wanted to go AthlonXP, 'cos my last one was, before I sold it. (had a useless MSI KT4V mobo) But the reasonable price of the FSB800 P4-C 2.4 GHz drifted my thoughts otherwise.
Here are the options to the Q I asked on the subject area.
    A) Abit IS7, P4-C 2.4 GHz
    B) Epox 8RDA3+, AthlonXP 2500+ Barton
Both will use Kingston HyperX PC3500 modules, two sticks of 256mb.(Getting these real cheap from a friends shop) Final touch will be a Xelo Radeon 9700.
Are both of these good setups and once again, which one is better bang per buck.
BTW what is the difference between Epox 8rda+ rev 2.0 and 8rda3+. If there is none the rev 2.0 is cheaper and has an active cooler on nbr.
thanx in advance for the replies

I think that I've repeated myself often enough about how luck plays a big role in overclockin' as both CPU's are known to produce good numbers but not all are made equal. The 8RDA3+ adds SATA and an extra nic.

Wiggo, I guess I should have asked this question: most i865pe mobos that I have read about so far support up to FSB1000 and the nForce2 u 400 mobos are made to run FSB400 and over. If I go ahead and buy AthlonXP 2500+ and nForce2 u 400 and run the cpu at FSB400 which is the stock speed for XP3200+ or get lucky and run the i865pe at FSB1000 therefore P4-C 2.4GHz@3GHz or anywhere near it, which one will perform better especially in 3D applications? Is the XP3200+ really equal to the P4-C 3.2GHz?
This is what I actually am wondering. : peace2:

Heres 2 reviews for ya to read from THG. Pretty much to answer your question, NO. According to THG that is.

"The Athlon XP has slid from being a mighty value champ to a pusillanimous paper tiger"

Yeah there is a difference with those procs at the given speed, therefore I can agree with THG that 2800+ had been a more suitable name for that particular athlon than 3200+ that in a way sounds more than it really is.

I'm waiting for 64Bit cpu's from Amd to see wether they can take the highest performance trone from Intel or not.

When it comes down to what you should buy I think you can't go wrong with either one of the setups. And I have to agree with Wiggo about the oc luck to reach those speeds..

    Hi ,

I have an 8RDA3+ and its a great mobo , but I know from another site which has official EPox support that a lot of people have had problems with certain RAM and this board . Even to the point of having to buy new RAM ! I`m pretty sure Kingston has been mentioned as a problematic RAM type for it. Some have fixed the prob with BIOS updates , others have not been so lucky. Just a thought !
