    Hey Guys,
I Ordered an Athlon XP 2500+ from googlegear on monday (along with an a7n8xDeluxe and Corsair XMS3200 512). The problem is, the processor is green, instead of brown. I remember the Inquirer running a story a while ago on AMD locking there Athlon XPs Multipliers, and the new revision of the chip was green. I havent yet installed everything, so i cant see for myself, but do any off u have any idea on it???
    thanks

The color of the substrate makes no difference. If you want to know about your processor, then get the AMD white papers and decode the label that identifies the processor that runs along one edge of the CPU. Or you can type the codes in on this website and it will identify the processor for you.

As to the multiplier thing, all AMD processors are factory locked unless you somehow end up with an engineering sample. It's just that the VIA KT400/A and nVidia nForce2 chipset based motherboards can bypass this locking technique and still give you the full range of multiplier adjustments.

But beware... stay away from the new VIA KT600 chipsets unless you want to have to physically unlock your processor to manipulate the multiplier. I just finished testing a new KT600 board not long ago and the same processor that goes through the multplier tables with ease on nForce2 and KT400 boards coughs up a hairball when I try to adjust it with the KT600.

I've got a Barton 2500+ myself and am currently running it at 2.2Ghz/400FSB. Was a breeze to overclock it with my NF7-S v2.0 nForce2 mobo. GL with your overclocking! ;)

Nice! :thumb: I also have those exact same components.

Question: Did you purchase a single 512MB XMS 3200 memory module or a pair of matching 256MB modules? I have a pair of 256MB modules and you will get better performance on any NForce2 mobo if you insert your RAM in matching pairs rather than a single module. If you bought one module you can always add a second one down the road.

Check my specs below. My system runs very stable at 200x11 with syncronized RAM. Also note my RAM timings. You can greatly improve your system performance by adjusting your RAM timings with that Corsair stuff! The Corsair RAM needs to run at 2.7 Volts minimum to achieve stock speeds though. Read the other post I made in this forum a few minutes before this one for more info.

Just be sure to get a good HSF if you plan to overclock that CPU!

Hold on, I chipped my 2500 barton the other day, got a new one, this 1 is Green my other was brown, ( brown 3-22 date, green 3-27 date) and i do believe the multiplier is locked on the green one.
They look different on the surface, looks like the green one would be a bear to unlock, the bridges seem buried or recessed and much smaller. this was my impression when i compared them visually before i installed it.
I was changing HSF and dropped the volcano 7+ , it rolled across my 2500 and was i relieved when i looked and saw no damage, i took alcohol on a swab to clean the core before installing my AREOFLOW and just as I touched the core a chip fell off, so much for visual relief.
if anyone remembers a site discussing the newer bartons could you please post it?

Yeah, i also have the same looking one. You can change the multiplier settings on them, and it works fine. Although your right, they do look like they would be a pain in the ass to unlock with bridging. Read the rest off this thread and ull get information on why we think its colorerd differently.

did you notice my memory settings 2-2-2-11. run a bench on your memory settings and then set you 6 to 11 and run the bench again, you might get suprised. I forget where I found this
