    Question Overclocking a P4 1.7Ghz

I have a crap Intel P4 1.7Ghz System with a spec as follows:
    HDD: Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm
    Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.70Ghz
256mb PC133 SDram (unknown brand) running a cas latency 2
    An MSI MS-6524 Mainboard

I have already changed the cas latency of the ram from 3 to 2 which has improved the performance a lot to Asher Moses and now want to try tweaking my processor. One thing that confused me is that in his BIOS Tuning Guide it states that you can't change the clock multiplyer on P4s and can change the frequency but in my bios it has an option to change the multiplyer but not the freqency!

    Any ideas?

That's an OEM MSI mobo, so no OC'ing for you. It may show the multiplier but you can't change it.

    Cool Re: Overclocking a P4 1.7Ghz

It gives me the option of 10 - 24 multiplier but i havent changed it cos im a newbie. It it a prebuilt machine and the options in the bios do seem very limited.

You can change it but either you'll get no change or no boot. Practically though if you could overclock it (you may want to try SoftFSB or CPUFSB though these are very limited and some homework must be done on the PLL chip) 2.1-2.2GHz is the usual ceiling for them a good quality BIOS but very little performance difference will be evident plus that SDRAM is already strangling the CPU for bandwidth and overclocking will only make that bottleneck worse.
