    Question New P4 3.0 OC

    Hello Everyone,

    System Specs;
    Intel P4 3.0Ghz Prescott Processor 800Mhz F.S.B. 1 MB Cache (Currently @ 3.3Ghz)
    Asus P4P800E-Deluxe Motherboard
    1GB of PC3200 DDR400 Ram
MSI GFX 5900XT 128MB Video Card

I am making my first attempt to OC my system. The P4P mobo allows for an easy OC, currently set at 10%.

    Temps:
    48*C to 54*C under load
    38*C to 41*C idle

I am running two 120mm fans, one for intake, one for exhaust, and the stock intel cpu cooling.

At what temps should I start to think about scaling back the OC with the stock cooling? I plan on upgrading the heatsink and fan, but until I do, I just want to play it safe.

Has anyone else OC'd this cpu? What were your settings/temps and what type of cooling did you use?

Just want to get a feel for what the processor can do/handle.

If I have forgotten any info, please ask, and I will supply it.

    Thanks

I have a friend who got it to somewhere around 3.6GHz with good temperatures. I'd suggest you do some research and learn how to overclock manually, instead of doing any sort of percentage overclock option that might be in the BIOS.

    Hey Yawg,

Ya, I plan on doing it the manual way, the %OC was just a quick and dirty way to get results until I decided to do it manually.
I was wondering if you could get me the settings that your friend used? What type of cooling etc etc. Thanks!

You can go here and talk to him yourself. I think he was using stock air cooling in a Thermaltake case desgined for really nice cooling. I think he was also using PC3200 RAM, which may hinder your overclockability a lot, depending on what RAM it is. I remember that while overclocking he discovered Prescotts can handle quite a bit of heat, and they throttle themselves down when it becomes an issue.
