    Default Pentium 4 3.06 533FSB, need help

Hi all, haven't been on the forums for over a year but i'm back for some much needed advice. This is my spec that i want to upgrade or overclock:

    Pentium 3.06HT
    Asus P48SX-X mobo 533fsb
    512, i think it's 2700 memory
ATi 9700 non pro gonna upgrade to a 9800 pro, or what similarly priced nvidia is better???

I've overclocked my system to 3.2ghz in the bios and with that mobo i don't think i would get much more, what mobo would allow me to overclock much more???? i just really want to change the mobo and overclock it

    Thanks
    MR

You would be better off doing a total upgrade (ram, motherboard, video card, cpu)

Why should he? His CPU is ok, and i guess the mobo is ok too. He just needs to upgrade the ram and vid card.

I'd say upgrade your video card to a 6800. A 9800 Pro isn't that much better than a 9700. The nVidia equivelent is the 6600GT, but it still wouldn't be worth the money for the performance gain.

You RAM and processor are fine. If the motherboard isn't a good OCing mobo (don't follow socket 478 boards much myself...), than a better board and maybe some better cooling could be worthy investments. Then, I'm assuming 3.06GHz P4s overclock well, but I don't really know.

If you were to do a total system rebuild, it should certainly be a socket 939 Athlon 64 system. If you're going to upgrade the video card, too, then it should be an nForce 4 Ultra motherboard such as the Chaintech VNF4, along with a PCI Express GeForce 6600GT, 6800, 6800GT, or an ATI Radeon X800XT (depending on budget and availability - 6800GTs and Ultras are harder to find then PCI-E X800XTs, assuming you'd even want more than a 6600GT).

An Athlon 64 3000, 3200, or 3500 would be the best processor options, depending on how much you're willing to spend. Your current RAM will actually be okay, though you'd want to replace it with a couple 512MB sticks of PC3200, eventually. You might also need a new PSU if you replace your current system with a socket 939 one.

When the Radeon X850XT PE's come out I think they'll be the top graphics card.

Thanks for the replies, so upgrade to a 6800 video card, and change my ram to 3200, it currently has 2700? Would my motherboard support this?? It's an Asus P48SX-X. What motherboard offers he best overclocking ability for this chip??

    Thanx

I'd suggest an ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe as its a good overclocker based on the i865 chipset and offers you the opertunatey to run dual channel memory.

Id' suggest you get more RAM and in doing so it would be best to have identical 512MB sticks, and getting anything less than PC3200 rarely makes much sense considering there's no price difference. You can keep using the PC2700 if you want, though, because replacing the video card and motherboard are more important for gaming performance and overclockability, respectively. You'll still be able to overclock with that RAM, and you'll probably be able to keep the RAM frequency at 1:1 with the CPU FSB.
